sure, it is not rare that a highrise or skyscraper stands next to a small 2 storey residental house....but a 610m tower next so such a small house is rare, just look on the pic how gigantic the CS looks against the 2 storey house. pretty impressive i think

And your point is? In every major city buildings are this close or closer.

How have the neighbors reacted about the tower? I think there has been a lot of Nimbys.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if the CS makes my property value skyrocket. It's not like there ever was much of a view from those homes. Kill me for blaspheming, but I think LSD is horrifically ugly.

Except for some issues over construction disturbance the neighbors have been very supportive of the Spire. They know a world icon when they see one.

Spire Images

Promised a while back, here are my images from the sales center reception area and the residential vignettes. Copyrights apply for all images for Calatrava, Gensler, Hedrich Blessing and so forth...blah, blah, blah.

Here it goes:

People in Chicago love it when a sky scrapper is built, unlike other cities.

May 07 - Lunch

From above

higer res
2007 series
2008 Q1 series
2008 Q2 series

Taking samples of the tailings - gravel from the grinding operation

A "small" caisson next to the main core pit.

Bits ready to use

Busy Bulldozer - cleaning out the slurry pit ( don't quite get this one, but he was very methodically scrapping all the slurry out of the pit ).

Moving mud around ( brought up from the core pit )

later the was getting the auger bits lined up in the correct order.

Maybee these aren't secant beams - I can't imagine that there are this many left to go.

45' caisson sleeves.

Plumbing supplies

Beam holder thing

The part that holds the beam

Holding it in a hole. - not sure why, later the beam will be removed and the caisson (?) buried.

Minimalist Totem Poles

The camera pointed at the Spire's site is in a window in the NW corner of 340 on the Park on the 22nd floor. (Our apartment)

the res is now 800 X 600 and shot every 30 minutes. We will shorten the interval, upload some archives and increase the resolution once things start getting interesting. We have to watch our bandwidth on the uploads.

We may zoom in a little, but the quality suffers (digital interpolated zoom).

That is so cool that you are doing the camera! Thanks. I also will be watching the camera to see the progress. BTW I love 340 OTP, excellent facade.

This is even taller than CN Tower!!! Beautiful building, much better than the Fordham Spire project! Hey, Chicago will get back the title of the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere?

McCreative, thanks a lot for the pictures. I have to make it clear I appreciate them before I kinda trash the design.

WOW thats bad! Design makes me think of somebody from the 1970s trying to look modern. Too much boring white wall space. Trump tower (trumpchicago.com) looks much more elegant. And those last few pictures are of the sales center.... and not the future elevator lobby of spire... right? very underwhelming. reminds me of the fake wood found throughout my shitty public university dorm.
