I think it looks like an elongated Gherkin. This is my favorite version. i still wouldn't mind it a tad shorter but i think its a winner.

I feel kind of so-so on this version - I really like the base and the landscaping and all that. But the top is sort of goofy for me, like it's whipped cream or something. Anyway, I'll wait for more and better renderings.

I love this version. It seems more masculine and fits Chicago skyline better than previous ones.

Um it looks nothing like the Empire State Building.

I rather like the new design. It may look like a ***** but it still looks incredible. Imagine looking up at it from street level.

no. traffic is not that bad there. i lived in the area for 6months, and anybody who says traffic is bad there is crazy.
i kinda wished traffic was grid locked 24/7 in the area so people would be forced to stop using their cars so much.

Hmmm I'm assuming the 'markers' are for the core? Too small to be CS' actual footprint? or something else?

ah well, whatever it is, its looking good for CS' future :P

Spire developer looks ready to make a move

March 14, 2007
BY DAVID ROEDER Sun-Times Columnist
"Skin in the game" is the operative term being used around Chicago these days. It's slang for financial risk. While it's unclear how much "skin" developer Garrett Kelleher has exposed in his plan for a 150-story building on Chicago's lakefront, it's clear he's putting a lot on the line.
How much? He declines to say what proportion of his net worth, reputed to be about $750 million from European projects, is going into the deal. But this news might be more telling evidence of his commitment anyway.

Kelleher, who lives in Ireland, has purchased for $8.5 million a mansion at 1416 N. Astor, real estate sources said. They said the sale closed March 5. Kelleher and his family will move to Chicago and live in the home while his celebrated spire, the work of architect Santiago Calatrava, is under construction, said Thomas Murphy, the developer's Chicago lawyer.

"This shows that Mr. Kelleher is very earnest and committed to this project," said Murphy, who confirmed a home purchase but not its location or other terms.

For his money, Kelleher got a Georgian home that dates from 1912, part of a landmark district. It's got six bedrooms, six-and-a-half baths and a "magnificent English garden," according to the marketing materials. "It's a fixer-upper," one source said. "He'll probably spend a million dollars or more upgrading the interior."

Credited to Prairie School architect Arthur Heun, the home once belonged to Jack Gray, former chairman of Hart Schaffner & Marx, who died last October. It was known as the William McCormick Blair house after the founder of the Chicago investment firm William Blair & Co.

The sale went through the Gold Coast office of Baird & Warner, with agents Thomas Gorman representing the seller and Janet Murphy, Thomas Murphy's wife, representing Kelleher.

Kelleher and Calatrava need to finish the latest modification of their condo creation at Lake Shore Drive and North Water Street, win the blessing from 42nd Ward Ald. Brendan Reilly and key community groups, and clear city zoning before they can start construction. The developer insists that, even though he has no pre-sales on the 1,300 units, Anglo Irish Bank is backing him to start construction soon after city approval.
