Question

According to the fascinating video posted a few pages ago [VIDEO @ 3:24min], it was shown that aside from the piles that we are seeing in these pictures, there will be smaller (yet deeper I believe) piles at the bottom of what is currently the hole (like a ring all around the hole a tad farther inside from the wall)... my question is does anyone know if those have been started? And if so, how much work is there left on them before other work can begin?

Yeah, their done. I'm wondering why they haven't started the core yet, its just been sitting there. They must be waiting for case to leave before they come in.

Oh I see... well that answers that question but raises another... Who would come in next and would CASE not have anything to do with the piles for the parking structure? CASE is a foundation company and I would think it reasonable to believe that they would be the ones to stick around for the underground parking.

Though if that is the case, as that video showed, the core of the building will rise before work starts on the parking (parking slabs anyway, the piles are done by then... if of course they actually do it as shown) so will that company do the parking once the piles are in or will they both coexist? How confusing... and complicated... I guess we won't really know for sure until it happens... soon hopefully... but you know what they say "you can't rush art."

They already have a lot of the garage columns in, im not sure how many they have left to go, but they go pretty fast, as they dont reach down into bedrock.

There were only 2 or 3 rebar cages for garage caissons on site today and one monster one. The stands were removed on Wed so I'd guess CASE is just about done. At other sites the next contractor ( Walsh - Bovis ... ) has waited for CASE to clear out first.

Also today they were removing the equipment used in rock grinding, and no rock grinding heads were in sight.

I'm so confused ...

I heard someone say that 2 more concrete rings have to be shown (needs to be dug deeper) or have they dug whole depth for the core???

The last part of the excavation - that will require 1 or 2 more of the whaler rings - will most likely be done by the next company. CASE did the caissons, secant and slurry walls. CASE is packing up and moving out, at other sites the next contractor has not started until CASE was gone.

I stopped by a few hours ago and another of the main caissons was buried, only 2 open still, with one BIG rebar cage waiting.

Buried

Open

Waiting

Nice models but Chicago Spire and a few towers look out of scale.

Yeah, Chicago Spire is too fat and Hancock's antennas are not right. Sears looks great though.

Also,
Thank you Harryc!

my suspicion: you'd use it more than you think. especially since high end condos tend to have large enough balconies that encourage taking advantage of them.
Plus, there's always the "wow" factor.
Imagine taking your friends on a tour of your new condo, then stepping out onto the balcony that overlooks the Chicago skyline and/or Lake Michigan for a cocktail... "The view from the living room is nice, but wait until you see it from out here..."
