There is no "delay." Just because you don't see much visible activity above ground does not mean that progress isn't being made.

From Sun-Times columnist Dennis Roeder (one of this project's most ardent critics):

Quote:
OOPS! Two weeks ago in this space, my brain on premature vacation, I improperly rendered the name of the public relations representative of Shelbourne Development Group Inc., the investor in the Chicago Spire. She is Kim Metcalfe of Weber Shandwick, and not only was she gracious about my flubbing her last name, she gave me an eye-opening tour of the Spire construction site at 400 N. Lake Shore Drive.

She did this in part to squelch the talk coming from neighborhood people that not very much is happening on the property. But crews are busy on mostly subterranean work, relocating spaghetti bowls of utility lines and starting the underground parking structure. As time goes on, this will be a great free show. Onlookers already bring their lunches to a ramp leading to the site from Lake Shore Drive.

I heard from my realtor that the spire has serious problems with selling condos. There are rumors in the real estate community about it going to a mix use building (rental + condo). Does anyone have a real facts?

I would think realtors have no idea because the Spire sales are all handled internally.

I am not really surprised. Even if I had the money for it, I wouldnt want to buy apartment there. Its not a nice location. You cant walk anywhere. Please correct me if I am wrong? If you want a morning coffee you better make it yourself, or you forget to buy a milk, you have to drive again. The design is great, but location sucks. Right in front of a highway and water on the the other side... And as we know in real estate its all about location, location, location.

Try Google street view. Go to E Illinois street and North Columbus Drive.

Looks like a good location to me. Subway access too.

You're right and location, location, location is why it's such a great site! It's certainly a premium site for condominiums in Chicago and better than almost every other one in the world.

One of which is Fox & Obel, a very upscale market.

The location is phenomenal. In fact, that stretch along the river is an absolute gem, usually very quiet with the hectic pace of downtown and Michigan avenue just within earshot, but pleasantly removed.

There's also a ton of amenities very close by.

Sounds like your realtor is quite the real estate guru so he should be able to provide you with all the facts you need.

Rebar for whalers is all gone.

The forms for the whalers were also gone, the yellow truck in the overview shot is a concrete pump truck. BVic reported they were pouring later. The plates above are embeded in the concrete so stuff can be welded to it.

Are they still planning on building the actual structure, or are they just doing the groundwork in case they decide to later? It would be a real shame if this thing never got built. Although the Sears Tower/JH come close, Chicago needs a "landmark" and I think this tower is best served to achieve that. 2,000 ****ing feet tall! It's just a shame it doesn't have some sort of elegant spire on top.

The activity at the site is by no means unceremonious. Currently, utility lines are being relocated in advance of construction of the parking structure.

Awesome. The seventh ring is in. I wonder if they will start uncovering the caisson tops now or wait until the utility upgrades are done?

I think Sears and JH exceed landmark. I also think no "elegant" spire is necessary.

absolutely, rich. but did I tell you that the party is two fold: it will also be an obama fund raiser (no pizza rolls for that part of the crowd). Still want to take me up on the offer?

not yet they'll pour 7th ring and will be exposed soon, then no more digging our of the core. Getting exciting.

I guess it's just a core, the tower itself will be much thicker?

Of course, it the tower was size of just core alone it will easily snap like a twig and will be very tiny, look at freedom tower construction site, its like that proportion with core and whole tower comparison.

orange bit in the photo is the core, and the whole structure is much wider (should be)
