no, (and rather confusing since SSC decided to lump proposals, approvals and U/Cs together), but Kelleher seems very intent on getting this one off teh ground.

It's not all that massive. The Sears Tower has a footprint of over 50,000 sq. ft. of space, while the footprint of the spire is between 25,000 - 28,000 sq ft. And remember the spire will be more than 500' taller than both structures.

With his talent, we should have known Calatrava would eventually pull a rabbit from his magic hat. It was just a matter of time. Love the revisions. As someone previously noted, it looks a lot more muscular and appropriately purposeful now.

Anyway, we better brace ourselves now because the Chicago skyline is going to look radically different after this twisting stairway to heaven becomes climbable. Initially, the city probably won't "feel" quite the same as the old Chicago we all came to know and love, but that's the beauty of change. As human beings, we're naturally programmed to react to change of any kind with a little bit of apprehension. Of course, they said that of the Sears Tower as well... but we should feel so lucky to be serve as the home to an internationally acclaimed superstar that lights up skies from coast to coast all over the world.* None other than Sweet Home Chicago. Daniel Burnham's gotta be smiling right now. This is a lot of fun.

Speaking of change, look how far we've come since 1980. Imagine that?

44 years, Photo by Charles W. Cushman 1963.

This 5 years later in 1968. LPT was just being topped out. I cropped it out because this is a large picture.

that is an awesome photo of part of the s-curve (the photo posted by nittany in 1980), not the most dangerous part though, it reminds me of the huge salt piles that used to be there,
that part of chicago was so industry heavy, like milwaukee's menomenee valley.
amazing how severe the turns used to be on lsd.

Not, 1980, 1963. Here's a link to all of Cushman's photos. Many of Chicago from 1939 to 1963.

I drove that s-curve as an early teen. I hated it and it scared the hell out of me evertytime I did it.

Superb design. Didn't really like old renders but this one is really great.

i never heard anything about whether or not chgo spire would have an observation deck; or perhaps that hasn't been determined.

the building creates the most difficult dilemma on the question of building such a facilitity: its site and how it is situated for views would warrant it, but the residential nature of the building and the difficulty of accessing it would suggest one shouldn't be built.

No. The developer says there will be no observation deck. The only possibility of public access may be a restaurant at the top, but even that is doubtful.
I think part of the reason is that it is a purely residential building.
