Yes, there is a law that prevents structures over 2000ft from being built. This was put in place in 1965 to prevent structures from interfering with air-traffic. Exceptions to the law can be made under FAA approval, only no one has been successful with getting the approval and building their project; that I know of. Then again, I only know of one company that has actually tried, they were planning on building a skyscraper in Chicago during the late 1970s-80s. They did get the ok, but financing fell through.

ummm....your comment is half right and half wrong.

right:it could be built because a quarter of the buildings apertments have been sold.

wrong:just because they sold 1/4 of the apertments doesnt mean that they will build it.if the economy doesnt improve then maybe they wont build it.

I wonder what banks are being asked to make loans to build this. I sure would like to be a fly on the wall in those discussions.

Shanghai World Financiar was a hole for years... but after they get over the Asian financiar crisis in late 90's they resumed construction, and build-it even higher.

I believe a third of the building has been sold, not a quarter.

First it was in the news that it had sold 1/3 of the building, more recent articles just before it was announced that any further construction would only start when the economy crisis will be over said that only a quarter was sold.

So what should believe, the old official information from the developer or the newer info from the press?

The latest numbers I saw from one of the several articles floating around was 395, which is a third of the building. I'm not sure which of these numbers are true but it doesn't matter because this building is either going to be built or it won't and there's nothing anyone on here can do to change the outcome no matter which number you believe. Btw, I believe the developer because he's the main source. I also wonder where the press get its information from.

You are entitled to your assessment, but I am glad that I and many other people don't have to share it.

I know that these are just your opinions but I think they all suck but I'm sure you'll think my opinions suck too so lets just agree to disagree.

a) A third of the building is currently sold and delivery of the building is not til 2012
b) That's your opinion and like *******s, everyone has one and they all stink.
c) 10-20 years? The neighborhood might not be the most vribrant part of the city right now but the Spire could also bring that extra vibrancy.

Quote of the day: Shelbourne Development "certain" Spire will be built

Posted 10/20/2008 by Mark Boyer

Over the weekend, The Sunday Business Post in Ireland reached a spokeswoman from Chicago Spire developer Shelbourne Development Group to discuss the liens that have been filed against Shelbourne by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and Chicago architecture firm Perkins and Will.

While many observers have said that the liens cast doubt on the feasibility of the project, Shelbourn maintains a air of confidence.

‘‘We are certain that the Spire will be built. A huge amount of time and money has been put into the project, and we have achieved above average sales in a very difficult market.”

‘‘Both of the companies in question were on four-year contracts, and they have been paid quite a high percentage of the overall fees they were due. We look forward to moving forward into mediation and arbitration, and hope to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.”

‘‘Once the utilities are complete, the structure can start to rise, but we have no date for that at the moment, due to the situation in the world markets. But the level of sales we have achieved shows that people want this building, and we look forward to moving forward with it once the global economic situation improves.”
