great, an ad in a free publication for readers that basically leverage their entire lives living in a 400 sf studio apartment so they can be able to afford 200 dollar diesel jeans & hang out in the viagra triangle....sounds very promising.

Deep trouble: How would you fill the Chicago Spire hole?

Payments sought for work on Spire

—Tribune staff, wire reports
November 4, 2008

The list of companies seeking payment for work performed on the Chicago Spire project continues to grow.

Late last month, Thornton Tomasetti, a New York-based firm with an office in Chicago, filed a mechanics lien against the project for $1.3 million for structural engineering design services it provided. The firm said it last worked on the Shelbourne Development Group Inc. project on July 1.

Last month, architect Santiago Calatrava filed a lien through his Lente Festina Ltd. seeking more than $11.3 million in payment from developer Shelbourne.

Separately, Chicago-based architectural design firm Perkins & Will Inc. filed a lien against Shelbourne for almost $4.85 million.

So what supporting evidence do you have to back up your statement that "this project is dead as a door nail"???? Obviously, with the market the way it is right now, there is a very real chance that the Spire will not get built. At the same time, considering that the developer has sold about 400 units in less than a year in an extremely tough market (including the $40 million penthouse), the possibility of increased interested in the Chicago real estate market from abroad/investors due to Obama's win and the strong possibility of the Olympics being in Chicago, and since the developer has hundreds of millions of dollars of his own capital to use in this project, I still like the Spire's chances.

But I am not going to make absolute statements asserting that there is a 100% probability that the Spire will get built. There are reasons and things that can happen that could cause either outcome to occur. But to make an absolute statement like you did, is just a tad bit silly.

It's not only me that believes that this project is in serious jeopardy. Recent articles on the project come to the same conclusion, As for 30% of the project being sold, those folks won't be the first to lose their deposits on a high risk construction project. I hope I'm wrong about this. Obama being from Chicago probably wont convince too many people to go ahead and spend a million bucks to buy a condo here. If we do land the Olympics, and rich foreign tourists come to Chicago and like what they see, maybe that might help sell a few more units. I would really be interested in knowing why millions of dollars in liens have been put on Garrett Kelleher. I know he has millions of his own money that he could use to finance a portion of this project, but no serious investor would ever do that. It makes more sense to use other peoples money (banks). Since the banks aren't lending right now, maybe Kelleher is stalling for more time.

If dead as a door nail is to much of an absolute statement for you how about the Spire project survives only on life support? Trust me. I REALLY want to see this built. However, I don't have a good feeling....

Here is another article....

Our skyline on pause
Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin sees Chicago's soaring artistry stall as money woes leave Spire, other towers short

Tribune staff report
November 3, 2008
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...,4607073.story

Quote:

How long the freeze will last is hard to predict. But it's clear that a chill has set in. And the trend reaches beyond the halt in construction on two supertall skyscrapers, including the twisting Chicago Spire that promised to soar 2,000 feet above the city's lakefront.

The credit crunch has staggered the city's condominium market. Although developers are expected to deliver a record-smashing 4,900 units this year, fewer than 500 units may be finished in 2010.

"We have ground to a halt," said Gail Lissner, vice president of Appraisal Research Counselors of Chicago.

^ This project like most big project have its challenges ahead...but all these articles are just saying the same thing over and over...there is nothing new that is posted...we know about the 3 liens...kehler is working on gettng them paid for...but just posting a bunch of artciles stating the same thing does not prove that this project is in a constant state of problems.

I agree, all massive projects have obstacles to overcome. Unfortunately for this one (and the Waterview) the current obstacles may be insurmountable. Is it just the 3 liens that halted construction? Of course not. The three liens amount to 17 million dollars. If Kelleher really was ready to plop down 300 million of his own money into the construction of the Spire, these liens would not have happened. There is definitely more to it.

They only optimistic way of looking at it is that Kelleher is just stalling for the real estate slump to pass.....

Dude, didn't you dream of living in Little Rock, AR during the Clinton years?

Please expound on your belief that Chicago RE can benefit from BO.

Really, BO lives in/near Hyde Park (Kenwood to be exact).

I don't think you can really compare any President that has come before to Barack Obama. No matter what you think of his politics he has successfully branded himself around the world and have people genuinely excited about the American president.

Now I don't think his presidency alone is going to sell condo units, but I think he has already put Chicago firmly on the international map more than it had already been, especially with his choice of victory speech venue / location of his transition planning.

I'm watching Jeopardy and the last question asked was this: "when the Chicago Spire is completed in 2010, what will it replace as the USA's tallest building?

OMG I missed chicago spire so much...

Hopefully harryc keeps on posting photos of the site (although something tells me there's no point doing that for many months to come, even next year when the economy in US will strike the bottom) the situation could be deadly to the reality of the construction.

Has there been news of something regarding construction or is something small occurring on site? I don't see the point of reopening this thread when people won't have anything constructive (no pun intended) to say.

Are there any pictures from any photo-contributers like harryc and imre? I haven't had the chance to see the construction site in months and am curious if anything has happened? (I know nothing major, im just talking about material, construction machines, etc.)
