I hope one day this will be built. It has an amazing design and will defininetly define modern Chicago. Right now, Chicago's main landmark is the Sears (Willis, whatever) Tower but, in all honesty, I don't like it as much as other Chicago buildings. So, yeah, just praying that this spire will be taken up by another company and built.

The site is still in the courts with a ruling expected in March. If Related Midwest wins their forced bankruptcy suit, the Spire may well be fully in their hands to either build as proposed or scrap for a different design.

No matter what, the site will host a very large development. Related doesn't do small.

Chicago is the second or third richest city in America, depending on the metric used. And therefore one of the richest and most prosperous cities in the world.

The notion that Chicago is some dead-zone of poor economic conditions and that its future is a bleak wasteland of nothingness is completely made up and in people's heads. A notion that has no basis in reality.

Of course, by comparison to New York, is looks worse off. But so does just about everywhere. It's like saying Kobe is a bad player because he's not as good as Jordan.
Yes, as I've said before countless major corporations have their global, national or regional headquarters in the city, all run by very highly paid executives and owned by wealthy stockholders or private owners. There's also many major hospital systems and law firms, as well as major sports teams with millionaire players and coaches.

Not to mention if it weren't a major financial center Chicago wouldn't be able to support just about every high end jeweler, watchmaker, fashion house and department store having major retail locations in the city.

Chicago Spire back on track

Quote:
GARRETT Kelleher’s dream to build the western world’s tallest building is back on track. The Chicago Spire, the building dreamed up by Irish developer Kelleher and Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava near the delta of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan, has secured €135m from a US company which should enable work to recommence.

If completed, the 2,000 foot residential building will be the tallest in North America.

Sounds too good to be true, especially when it comes to that Kelleher guy.

Lol. Its been six years but maybe something can still happen. Kelleher has been given a big chunk of change so obviously someone other than just him believes in the project.

I actually think this will happen now. $135 million says serious investment to me and it's easy to see why someone would invest. There's a bit of a condo boom in the Chi at the moment and Chicago river property is some of the most desirable land in the city. Just think of the upcoming developments or really development in Chicago for the last 10 years... River Point plaza, Wolf Point, 111 Wacker, Trump International Hotel, 150 N Riverside, and pretty much all of Lake Shore East.

Credit markets are also easier in many ways now than they were in 2007 at the height of the boom. I wouldnt say this has a large chance of happening, but after this loan it seems to be more than just a pipe dream.

Oh, and to the above, the article said 135 million euros, not dollars. Thats more around 160 million dollars.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Actually, when it comes to the Chicago Spire, I'll believe it when I touch it. And even then I'll be skeptical.

Otherwise, glad to see something happen. Say what you will about the financial/commercial aspect of the project, the design is absolutely incredible and deserved to be built.
