Well, it's always a challenge for a city built on a marsh.

What a twist it would be if this tower got built and a bunch of 2000 footers in China didn't. Economic outlook here is somewhat rosy compared to the potential catastrophe brewing over there.

Agreed, as cool as some of those projects are I can't help but feel that China is in trouble in the near future for over-ambitious building.

I don't however, think the article I just posted was necessarily positive... it's all really confusing at this point so it's hard to tell.

This is looking more and more like Kelleher and Related are combining forces. The language even implies that Atlas had little intention to build the Spire. The $1 million loan is for upkeep of the property.

What this article seems to say is that we all got our hopes up waaaaaaay too soon. Nobody's getting paid off after all.

Basically that's what I got from it too.

I hope some worthy developer with ambition eventually gets their hands on the site.

Although in recent speculation a lot of people are having distraught thoughts of the outcome of this, can anyone tell me when the deadline for the revival is and the most recent news?

The foundation work is well below the freeze line - your roads buckle because the ground underneath gets saturated with water, and then freezes, causing the road to crack, which allows water in, which freezes .......

The most recent news is this: Shelbourne, the site owner, was making moves to accept a $135M loan from Atlas to pay off it's debt. Instead, it got $75K from Related MW (who already owns said debt) for "site maintenance," with the possibility of getting up to $1M, again strictly for the upkeep of the construction site. It's speculated that the whole deal with Atlas was never going to happen, and was just a ploy to extract some money out of Related. Sadly, there is no deadline for revival.

If I got that wrong, somebody else please share their take.

As far as I understand that's pretty much what's happening... but if they're paying money to upkeep the site I would assume they plan on building something there (probably not a 2000 foot tower though)

If you remember correctly that whole is only there to provide a place to build the core. All the pieces of it will be removed in the garage area is excavated from the top down as the tower rises. The concrete rings are just there to provide internal support for the pilings. Also the image you see is basically just service damage and nothing consequential.

Chicago Spire developer close to deal with largest creditor

Quote:
The developer of the Chicago Spire is close to an agreement with its largest creditor over financing the forlorn lakefront tower, lawyers for both sides said in court today.

Chicago lawyer Joseph Frank, who represents Spire developer Garrett Kelleher, said this morning that his client recently “came to terms” with Related Cos. over a financing deal that would pay back creditors and allow a development to proceed on the property at 400 N. Lake Shore Drive.

Related would provide the financing, but ownership of the development under the deal was not disclosed. The trial adjourned so negotiations between the two parties could continue. The trial is scheduled to reconvene at 2 p.m. in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Chicago.

The Spire landed in Bankruptcy Court last fall after Related acquired the project's delinquent $96.5-million construction loan and filed an involuntary Chapter 11 petition with other creditors against Mr. Kelleher's development entity, Shelbourne North Water Street L.P. Mr. Kelleher, an Irishman who began his Chicago career as a commercial painter in the 1980s, planned to build a twisting, 1,194-unit condominium tower that would have soared 500 feet higher than Willis Tower, but the real estate crash cratered those plans and the 2.2-acre development site remains just a hole in the ground.

I'm not getting my hopes too high but that's certainly better news than I expected!

I still think the Hudson Spire or even 2 WTC in New York will be built before this. I say this simply because it doesn't seem like this will get any financing for a long time.

True but now there's actually a chance that this will be built and that makes me happy

The city that *ahem* INVENTED the skyscraper definitely needs a megatall.
