Didn't somebody say, however, that lack of upkeep and rusting probably means they'll have to start the foundation over from scratch? Seems a bit farther off than 'On Hold' would suggest

No, it won't require much to get going again, the foundation is fine, just needs a cleanup

In my opinion (and I'm not an expert) the underground bit of the foundation is as much affected by the element whether there is building sitting on top of it or not. If this foundation would need to be replaced then I guess every building would need it's foundation replaced every few years but of course that's not how it is so I suppose all it needs is maybe reconstruction of one top layer of concrete/rebar that was directly exposed to the element and that's it most likely.

I recall somebody mentioning that the approval would expire quite soon, and a new approval process would have to be undertaken before construction could hypothetically resume. I don't really know how it works in Chicago though.

Indeed I remember something. I couldn't google up the actual date but it is said the approval will expire later this year. So I guess it's still on hold at the moment. I wonder though will they need to go through another approval process should they restart construction before the current approval expires? And if so would it be that much time consuming if it was for exactly the same building like before?

Crappy sketch up effect of how the future skyline will look with the existing proposals.

Forgive me I'm not a pro.

No, that's actually pretty good. This is coming from a Graphic Design major, it's good! Didn't know it was a drawing for a second.

If I remember correctly, the rusting is a non issue because that metal was always going to be replaced once the building construction began, even if there hadn't been a delay.

Essentially, the only thing required to get the site into a workable condition is to drain the hole, maybe shore up some of the lower levels.

What is that tower taller than the Willis that's right next to it?

Oh. I didn't know it was 2000 feet tall.

That was a pretty nice drawing. I can't draw Chicago. Let me show you.

This was a really old picture I drew. In my defense, I knew nothing about the geography of Chicago. But I made it look like Shanghai. I think if I drew Chicago now, I would do better, but not by much.

P.S. That building with the tubes on the upper right is the Trump International Hotel and Tower.

Still 40 000 times better than what I could draw

Thank you for making me feel better. Now that I've embarrassed myself, I will try to redeem myself by showing the cluster of buildings I know best: the World Trade Center.

I'm not saying that it's good, I'm just saying that it's hopefully better than me drawing Chicago a very long while back.
