True. I'm not too sure about the Spire having a chance at getting built. I'm also worried about what Related would do if they got their hands on it.

You left coasters just get jealous whenever a proposal for a great building like this is presented elsewhere! You guys keep spreading out at uncontrollable rates instead of building up!

If you can name me one building that started out ugly but, through the magic of cladding, was made beautiful, I'll concede the point. But you can't, and won't.

And even if you could, I'd be able to name a dozen that have been made worse by that kind of 'fix it tomorrow' attitude to construction. I'm looking at one right now out of my window and it's the ugliest reclad that you've ever seen in your life(Guy's Tower)

Cities are full of ordinary looking buildings. Not even ugly, just ordinary. Value engineered boxes that were within budget and on schedule, just like everyone wants. And nobody cares because cities are not defined by ordinary looking towers. They're defined by beautiful, outrageous, style-defining structures whose budget overruns and slipped construction schedules do not matter one bit because they're timeless classics.

In fifty years time, literally nobody will care that 1WTC was expensive or slow to build or wracked with construction problems and committee meetings and all the other bullshit that lesser developers actively avoid. All they'll care about is that it is beautiful, and striking, and defines the city.

If you say no to something beautiful, because you're afraid it will cost too much, and choose something ordinary instead, then you deserve to be forgotten. And you will.

Nanjing Youth Olympics center. The building was okay to begin with, but compared to the other buildings in the city far inferior. At least i consider the supertalls of Nanjing all among the best in the world design wise. In the end the building went from ok, but nothing special to amazing considering the cladding that was put on it. The realization started as early as the podium got cladded far better than it was in the render, the quality of cladding on the tower itself is just a difference in miles. So from a tower i hardly follow construction it got to one of the best towers finishing lately.

Hefei Feicui TV Tower. before it was built it was just another skyscraper in china, not even a really good height, just standard. when the cladding came up it struck right thru the heart. one of the best cladded buildings in the world, like the cladding even more than Shanghai Tower. it is not cladding, but art.

granted, both buildings were not ugly, but they had nothing special to offer either when they started construction.

If this thread will continue to be like this I have to agree. Close it until we have something concrete.

Why close this when this has had more updates in 6 months then half of the other threads in this section?

LOL. Good point, there are tons of threads here that haven't had a post since last year.

this thread has over 10000 posts, if another building has no updates it might get bumped here and there, but a thread as big as this just doesn't stop to grow even without any updates. and so it will be on the first page of the threads in this section no matter what.

Truth, might be a little jealousy in his statement.

On one hand, this isn't super likely to happen. We are really hanging onto Kelleher's unrelenting optimism.

On the other, this proposal is by far the most incredible, and impressive in the United States. So the slight chance that Chicago might get it, is bound to ruffle some feathers. Especially in places like the West Coast where something the size of the Sears is nothing more than a pie in the sky dream.

True, but the US is one country and we're all on the same team.

Plus there's a proposal (maybe not super likely) for Seattle for a Sears sized building.
