OK, who flagged my emoticon post? I was just trying to express myself...

Very sad day for the US Skyscraper community.

This was a great exercise for Calatrava the engineer but a lousy deal for any developer. I don't know who would take this one on anywhere on the planet.

As much as I never cared for the design, I really hope Related can get something built here with style and substance that would be the highlight of the Chicago skyline. I can also understand and sympathize with those who really hoped this kind of design would be a reality. Hopefully something non boxy and truly iconic can still go there. Chicago has the best skyline in the US other than New York City and should get a gorgeous, timeless building there that celebrates Chicago's future.

In summary

The spire is dead after more than 10 years of a random british dude who was dumb enough to think it could happen in the first place.

Now Related has the site, every building in this city they've made is shit, and I really hope the next one won't be SHIT. Or else I'll be very very pist.

This should be moved to a general discussion thread to discuss the future of the site.

Anyone that cares about the future of Chicago's skyline these are the building to look out for.

Wolf Point 950~ ft
Wanda Tower 1150 ft~
Also look for a large building next to the Wrigley building

R.I.P. The Chicago Spire

I think that any other scheme for this site would want to take advantage of the existing foundation/basement for the Spire. Since that foundation/basement is round, it would be expected that any other tower for this site would be cylindrical (with or without a taper). So while new proposals might not be on the scale of the spire, they would certainly stand out among their boxy neighbors and soften the Chicago skyline a bit.

Is it possible that they can use this Calatrava guy's proposal?

So sad. One of the most beautiful proposals, period. When I first heard of the project (back when it was still "dead") I thought it was nice, then moved on. Now that I've got my hopes raised a little bit, I'm a little sad - better go put this back on my favorite unbuilt projects - this is definitely my favorite. I don't care what the haters think. Chicago will be a great city with or without it - and that's coming from a New Yorker.

Nice tower it was, but Chicago doesn't attract the FI for that kind of ridiculously expensive and complicated fantasy. How many billionaires from the developing world want buy in Chicago, with the awful weather and the fact that is not a glitzy destination (French people know Chicago mainly for AL Capone and Abatoires). Sorry, but Chicago has an image problem with foreigners because it is in the shadow of glitzy cities. NY couldn't even build that. As you know, NY build mainly boxes or variations on them. If NY can't even get an organic tower build with a complicated facade that curves, what chance does Chicago have and a megatall as well??????? Even China doesn't build many of these towers. Every time you see a curvy complicated tower in NY proposed, it's value engineered into a box or something much more simple. That should tell you something. NY, the capital of the RE investment world right now, can't even build such fantasy style buildings on a developers bill. Face it, the money to build these designs is just too high in this country and much of the developed world. A very serious developer is needed, lots of easy capital and cheap labor. Not going to happen with a guy who has never built a scraper in his life.

RIP Tower, but it was too glitzy for Chicago's stoical build environment and would have been a folly of the greatest magnitude, a weird party trick looking like an outcast among the great practical and sturdy PROUD AMERICAN towers of the city that were build from pure capitalist will. It would have suited Miami far better.

Chicago will always have one of the world's greatest skylines, and it was among of the first to go tall. Obviously this is not a fail on the city's part, but the developer's.

Even with a stellar developer, there is not much chance of Chicago sustaining such a fantastical tower that would be a tough sell in Dubai or China with it's complicated design and need for big pocketed investors. They will always gravitate towards the glitzy cities first, that's where the money goes..NY would not build this tower, it would be valued engineered down just like all other complicated towers with an organic design recently.
Chicago will get the leftovers and it goes on and on down the chain from there. That's why the places that have the best modern towers with the groundbreaking designs are all in big foreign investment hubs where rich people from unstable countries want to live in, at least part time.. And not just that, the capital supply is just not there in the developed world right now, that's why you see these towers in China and government supported development areas like Dubai. I feel your pain Chicago, but your city has far more interesting towers than mine so I'm not too sad for you.
