Am I crazy to think that related might come up with something worthy here?

Aren't the foundations damaged from several rains and years abandoned?

Such a stunner in my opinion. I wonder if it could be built in another location.

six proposals to replace chicago's spire - the tower that never was
http://www.designboom.com/architectu...was-1-31-2015/

Quote:
over a decade ago, an ambitious project was undertaken by developer garrett kelleher to construct a 2,000 foot twisting tower designed by calatrava near the south bank of the chicago river. as fate would have it, ‘the spire’ came along with budgetary issues and left the developer in over 100 million dollars in debt, forcing him to cede the property to local developers related midwest. so here they are, faced with a 76-foot deep circular foundation in the ground that was to support several thousand feet of unrealized potential- so what’s the solution? the developers picked 5 local architecture firms (SPACE architects + planners, VOA, solomon cordwell buenz, urbanlab, and CLUAA) and one landscape firm (hoerr schaudt) and posed the question:

what would you put in a 76-foot deep hole?

each studio came up with diverse and creative solutions to make a failed dream into a productive architectural site for the community.
proposal 1: ‘mine the gap’
studio: SPACE architects + planners
lead designers: jean dufresne, jay keller, ron dean, roy donoso, arash irani, and mark pearson

proposal 2: ‘birds in horto’
studio: hoerr schaudt
designer: peter schaudt

proposal 3: ‘the urban island’
studio: VOA
lead designer: michael day

proposal 4: ‘the chicago beacon’studio: solomon cordwell buenz
designer: devon Patterson

proposal 5: ‘the swimming hole‘studio: urbanlab
designers: martin felsen and sarah dunn

proposal 6: ‘the high tech hot tub’studio: CLUAA
designers: clare lyster and alejandro saavedra

I like #4!

Wow! The Chicago Beacon looks 1000x better than the Spire. A lot of homage clearly paid to the Gherkin, but clever use of green space, and still a distinct form overall. I wish this wasn't just a vision; I'd get super behind this tower.

That said, I wouldn't mind that in-the-round theater space either.

Are these legit proposals or just visions? I like that skyscraper a lot although I feel whatever goes here should be at least 300m.

If they could combine proposal 4 and 1 that would be a dream.

Though the pool would really make Chicago stand out among cities and would be a huge contribution to public space and livability, which is arguably just as important. There will always be room for new skyscrapers, but something like this near downtown Chicago is once in a lifetime. I doubt it will happen, though.

Imo, I like proposal 4 better than the original Calatrava's Spire.

The foundations are perfectly fine and could be used with just a little cleaning up! What you see in the large hole is just the piles in the retaining ring they were just put in place to keep the dirt from filling the hole back up. They were never designed to remain in place permanently anyway. There's a ring of huge Caissons in a circle outside of the hole that were completely buried to protect them in these would be perfectly usable. I don't believe they ever put the caissons in the bottom of the center hole where they would have supported the core of the building.

I kind of like these designs, but at least half of them pay too much attention to the fact that there's a hole in the ground. If you want a swimming pool, go to some other site and build a hole in the ground! I like Proposal 4 the best because it's the only skyscraper, but the design isn't as great as the Chicago Spire. Maybe with some revisions to that proposal they could build something nice there. I'm not so confident something might be built on this site, but if the owner's mindset is that something must fill that hole, we might get a new attraction for Chicago.

The owner, Related Midwest is cooking up something BIG but it may have to wait until the condo market heats up.
