fantastic - never heard it called that before. Presume you mean 30 St Marys Axe, aka the Swiss Re Building, or more commonly known in the vernacular as the 'Gherkin'.

can't see the resemblance to the Gherkin myself, but the Chicago Spire is an incredible design. Not sure I'd want to live in it - just looks downright scary.

Did the Chicago Architectural Foundation boattrip last Friday, and sailed right past the site - all quiet before, but looking forward to tracking it on here when it finally kicks off.

If there's not going to be an observation deck at the top imagine the prize of a condo at the top floor. Anyone guesses the prize??? I would buy one if I had the money, just paying the view

I've been excited about this tower for ages and to be honest I never thought it would be built. However, hearing that it is is such great news and Im looking forward to seeing construction updates on here. This along with the Trump Tower Chicago's skyline really will be more awesome than it is now! The people of Chicago are lucky to get this thing it's quality.

Im coming to live in Chicago next year temporarily. This means that these projects are for me too!!! Do you think it will be built by then What will be built between now and say Mar 2009? I love trump building too! And waterview. I cant wait to come. Chicago is getting some awesome buildings.

In reference to the regulations for air - let me tell u something - In Sydney there are NO direct flights over the CBD; however there is no way in hell you can build a tower (to point not just roof) higher than 309m. That is the absolute tallest as stipulated by CASA. And they have so much power it will be impossible to go over. To take them on you will have to go through a million processes and you must have a legitimate reason - not just "we want it tall." But you cant even take them on unless you have permission to. They will not lift the restrictions. They have been since 70s. So you guys are lucky. I Cant wait to see this tower under construction.

And that's not his first work in the midwestern part of the USA. Check out his design for the recent addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum, located on the shore of the same lake about 160 km to the north of downtown Chicago.

I just went to the site and ground testing and core sampling in-progress... if this happens, that skyline from the lake will be absolutely beautiful!

And even better - the Trump building will look like a stump! BTW that blue & silver monstrosoty is looking worse and worse!!

I guess this building it's perfect. Just what Chicago needs. It's a great supertall, with great details in the facade. Just wait to see the glassy colour! Will be peeeeeeerfect!

Wow. He's got quite a mix of stuff, there. I've been to the Milwaukee Art Museum... Didn't realize he did that. Beautiful building, inside and out.

...And it moves!
