I like the height - but the base looks terrible.
It looks like a doily blanketed over a beach ball.
It looks fragile, dainty and unbalanced at the base.
It does not give the impression of strength, or structural integrity that one might want to convey to visitors or tenants of such a tall structure.
The base should say - me, strong like bull. Big Walls never fall down , nothing dainty or lacey or airfilled. Solid strength only.
Freedom tower succeeds here not just for the base but the entire structure.
The Chicago drill bit tower fails to communicate the right message at ground level.
This is a major drawback.

Should be a dark colour though. Dark Grey, Navy, Black or Metallic Silver, Gold.
Baby blue will just add yet another gay dimension to the appearance at the base.
Chicago deserves a redesign.
Other than that it's AOK.
My 2 cents.

Sorry if I have not been entirely politically correct.
I'm tired of being politically correct.

I think the problem is the renders. The glass looks opaque in these. I think it will look far better in real life.

Look at the base, it looks fragile, although it's architecually nice IMO. Still... I don't know how a base like this will hold the size of the building

I think the "apparent fragility" of the base is part of the illusion Calatrava is trying to make. When I first saw it, that's the first thing that came to my mind. He is brilliant.

If that base is brilliant then a triangle balanced on its point as a design theme for a building base must be genius!

Here is an image of a scraper in China from a real brilliant architect named Adrian Smith.

He knows how to choose appropriate tasteful colors for a skyscraper.
This building is a prime example of his expertise in this area.

The blue of the drillbit in Chitown is a slap in the face to all that is decent in the great city if Chicago.
It's not an evening gown. It's not a car. It's not a seadoo. It's a skyscraper.
Surely it's not too late to stop this embarassment from happening.
I can see it happening in LA if they didn't have earthquakes.
But in the heartland the people are different.
They don't like fairytale nonsense.

I don't think Calatrava did his homework very well, if at all.

I think you are just trying to justify your own dislike of the design.

If Chicagoans did not like this project, how did it manage to progress this far in two years? How can you say that people don't like this "nonsense" when the major architecture critics have praised it, the ordinarily NIMBY groups have congratulated the developer and architect, and the city endorsed the project?

Also, you bring up Adrian Smith and even he has publicly praised the building even though he is working on a competing project (Trump).

You are completely wrong. Majority of chicagoans and midwesterners just love this project and it is going to be another gem in an already beautiful skyline.

The Spire is a beautiful piece of art, and will be one of the greatest modern architectural marvels of our time. Of course with the approval of Chicagoans....

It promises to make money for the developer, the city, other investors and financial participants, etc.
These are the people who determine if it goes forward. Banks basicaly.
They think the condos will sell regardless of the aesthetics. That's enough for them. The "people" or " Chicagoans" don't really enter into it, sadly.

Basically the same question. I refer to the answer above.
If you had a vote among lifelong Chicagoans who have nothing to gain from this project and who are knowledgable about architecture I'm pretty sure they will say this is not suitable for this city. And they would be right. Those who stand to gain in pocket don't really give a darn about aesthetics, only about the bottom line. So what else is new?

Can you provide any reference or proof this is true. I find it a tad hard to believe.
But seriously, don't you think that Chicago deserves something a little less frilly. I dunno. Maybe only women will buy there. Whatever.

Another genius, Frank Lloyd Wright, is rolling over in his grave.
He would have hated this thing with a passion.
