Chicago Spire construction announced

By Blair Kamin
Tribune architecture critic
Published June 26, 2007

The developer of the planned Chicago Spire, the twisting 150-story lakefront skyscraper that will be the nation's tallest building, announced Tuesday that construction on the tower's foundations will begin "within weeks."

Skeptics have maintained that the residential skyscraper, planned to house 1,200 condominiums, would never get off the ground, especially with the nation's housing market in a slump.

But the developer, Garrett Kelleher, executive chairman of Shelbourne Development Ltd., said he has hired Case Foundation Company to provide 34 concrete and steel caissons that will be drilled 120 feet into bedrock to support the 2,000-foot-tall tower. Its designer is Spanish-born, Zurich-based architect Santiago Calatrava.

Case has obtained a foundation permit from city officials, Shelbourne said in a news release. Construction of the foundation work is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2008.

Coming a little more than two months after the Chicago Plan Commission granted approval to the project, the announcement indicated that Kelleher would meet -- or beat -- his self-imposed deadline for breaking ground. He had said he wanted construction to begin by June 30.

Construction equipment is already present on the 2.2-acre site for the tower, located on the north bank of the Chicago River just west of Lake Shore Drive. The skyscraper, whose cost has been estimated as at least $1.5 billion, is scheduled for completion in late 2010.

Kelleher said he would start selling units in September. The weak dollar is expected to help sales of the project overseas.

The sales center for the Spire is to be located on the 18th floor of the NBC Tower, 454 N. Columbus Dr., which overlooks the skyscraper's site at 400 N. Lake Shore Drive.

Probably not right away, but eventually LSE developers will build something on those sites next to Chandler. I would guess something tall too considering the unobstructed views of the lake.

Thanks for the pictures Retrograde!
I'm almost as excited about these photos as I was when I saw those same shovels tearing up the parking lot for my new building!
Exciting stuff!

What would be really great (and I don't know if you would be in a position to do this and it would be a big commitment so you might not want to even if you could) would be if you could set up a tripod in a carefully marked place so that you could take a picture from the same spot every day, which could be put together into a "movie" of the progress. This building is going to be unbelievable and it would be really nice if someone could systematically chronicle the construction. "We" should make this the best documented construction project in history. I'd take the responsibility myself, but sadly I live in another state.

I think from now on we should just direct people here http://www.boca-del-mar.com/FAQ/ if they have a question that has been answered many times before. That site (created by UberAlles) has pretty much every piece of info you need.

no desire to put any damper on this and good things sure seem to be happening at chicago spire, but if things are really "taking place", wouldn't there be a lot more media coverage going on?

But, don't we have to dig out some stuff before putting a crane on the construction site??
Maybe it's just a crane for another constructionsite??
