Why media coverage? They are just digging and making a whole . Once the building starts going up then the press and the people starts getting excited.

Spire's construction set to begin
Work on skyscraper to start in weeks

By Blair Kamin
Tribune architecture critic
Published June 27, 2007

The developer of the planned Chicago Spire, the twisting 150-story lakefront skyscraper that will be the nation's tallest building, announced Tuesday that construction on the tower's foundations will begin "within weeks."

Skeptics have maintained that the residential skyscraper, planned to house 1,200 condominiums, would never get off the ground, especially with the nation's housing market in a slump.

But the developer, Garrett Kelleher, executive chairman of Shelbourne Development Ltd., said he has hired Case Foundation Co. to provide 34 concrete and steel caissons, which will be drilled 120 feet into bedrock to support the 2,000-foot-tall tower. Its designer is Spanish-born, Zurich-based architect Santiago Calatrava.

Case has obtained a foundation permit from city officials, Shelbourne said in a news release. Construction of the foundation is expected to be finished in the first quarter of 2008.

Coming a little more than two months after the Chicago Plan Commission granted approval, the announcement indicated that Kelleher would meet his self-imposed deadline for breaking ground. He had said he wanted construction to begin by June 30.

Construction equipment is already present on the 2.2-acre site for the tower, located on the north bank of the Chicago River just west of Lake Shore Drive. The skyscraper, whose cost has been estimated to be at least $1.5 billion, is scheduled for completion in late 2010.

Kelleher said he would start selling units in September. The weak dollar is expected to help sales of the project overseas.

The Spire's sales center will be on the 18th floor of the NBC Tower, 454 N. Columbus Drive, which overlooks the building site at 400 N. Lake Shore Drive.

Has been a long time since i last read in this thread.
So finally at least small parts of construction seem to begin. Great!

I just cant believe that it will/should be finished by 2010... thats just 3 years from now. And construction is by zero

When u consider other smaller projects that although take more time... very optimistic calculation... without any doubt

Just watched them mention the beginning of construction of the Chispire on the WGN news a few minutes ago

I spoke to a foreman on the site around noon today. He said that the drilling for the caissons will begin either this weekend or early next week.

If you have any doubt just travel to the site and ask one of the foreman. They're extremely friendly and willing to share some very cool info.
