No it was Bajaj M80. Later came M80 Major and now they stopped that too I guess. But still I can see lot of persons using this vehicle and I do remember the caption for M80 "கரடுமுரடான பாதைகளிலும் கட்டுமஸ்தான வண்டி"

Earlier it used to Bajaj 150 cc. For those who could pay in $, it was Bajaj Chetak.

For loads, M 80 was the best. I dont know why they stopped the production. It was so popular. They should have come out with better versions.

TVS 50 XL & XP are popular all over TN rural areas but it is not a match to M80 for loads.

I bet even today if Bajaj start releasing M80 or M90 , then most TVS XL users will switch over.

We had one M80. Even five people have ridden on that but still goes at a decent speed(have to be careful in balancing though). Lots of carriage space on rear and even an aftermarket child seat can be fitted. Good old scooter.

Bajaj has to thank Honda and vespa for the success of it's products, after all M80 is an inspiration of the Worlds largest selling 2 wheeler Honda Cub and the Chetak inspiration from Vespa scooters.

Buses to get spl privilege on Anna Salai

Quote:
Traffic from Nandanam junction to Eldams Road signal on Anna Salai will soon be diverted to extend the bus rapid transit system (BRTS) and facilitate metro rail work.

Traffic police are likely to implement the diversions from April 7. As per the plan, vehicles coming from Saidapet will be diverted at Nandanam signal onto Venkatnarayana Road, South Boag Road, North Boag Road and GN Chetty Road to reach Anna flyover at Gemini. Only buses will be allowed on Anna Salai from Saidapet till Gemini.

In March, Anna Salai was made one-way from Eldams Road junction to Anna flyover for metro rail work, except for a single lane for buses. The success of the trial BRTS on the two-km stretch has prompted police to extend it to Nandanam signal, sources said.

This will be effective until the metro rail work is completed on Anna Salai. Three stations are being built on the two-km stretch on Anna Salai. Anna Flyover, Teynampet and Nandanam stations are being constructed, and the road has been made one-way to speed up work. If successful, this will be extended to other arterial roads after we do proper studies,” a senior police officer said.

The separate lane will reduce travel time of buses on Anna Salai. This is like a trial run for BRTS. It is also a relief for our drivers who had complained of extra travel time due to the earlier diversions,” said an MTC official.

Following the diversions for metro rail work in the city, MTC had hiked their tariff on various stretches.
With the state government still not decided on the proposal for a dedicated bus lane on Old Mahabalipuram Road, the traffic police have decided to test BRTS on Anna Salai.

Today, in the morning peak hours, it took me 2 hours to go from Adyar to Mahalingapuram (Nungambakkam near Loyola) through T Nagar.

It is better if one can avoid T Nagar esp VN Road (Anna Salai to Boag Road Jn), Boag Road, Pondy Bazaar Road.

People from South can take CIT Nagar, Usman Road
People from East / North can take Gemini, Nungambakkam High Road, Kodambakkam High Road, Valluvar Kottam Road.

Crossing Anna Salai is very difficult esp in CBD areas. If needed, cross only at Gemini, Little Mount, Spencers, GP Road, Walaja Road , Perityar Statue Jns.

I think this proposal of having one more flyover over Gemini could attract resistance from US embassy quoting security reasons. The height of the flyover would be well enough to overlook the embassy..

I guess even US Embassy are planning to shift their location to some other place. Remember reading about this sometime back. We shouldn't be stopping our Infrastructure plans for something like this and this flyover plan looks to be a good solution if not the best solution.

Cops fear to snuff out beacons of violation

Quote:
CHENNAI: A car with a red beacon is a privileged vehicle on city roads. The policeman makes way for it on congested roads and salutes as the vehicle passes, often not knowing who is in the vehicle. It could be a dignitary; it could also be a conman.

How could anyone know, for the city police have not caught anyone for unauthorized use of red beacon atop cars in the last 10 years, as the reply to an RTI application by TOI shows. This despite the Madras high court asking the police to take action against unauthorized users. While the police records are blank on the offence, sale of red beacon units go on in Pudupet and spare part shops in other places. In Pudupet, all it takes for a revolving red light which gives you immunity from police challans is Rs 500. "You can come anytime and pick it up," said a shopkeeper.

In the RTI reply dated March 21, the traffic police said, "No vehicles were caught in Chennai for installing revolving red lights without permission." In response to a question on the number of inspections conducted in the last 10 years, the reply is rather evasive: "Enforcement on violation of red revolving light in vehicles is conducted daily."

Sanjay Arora, additional commissioner of police (traffic), was more candid when he said many officials of several government departments are responsible for unauthorized use. "A drive should be conducted by government agencies to check whether officials using red beacons on the vehicles are authorized to do so," he said.

Police officials said they had caught people using beacons without authorization, but most got away using their influence. Rules permit only 19 categories of dignitaries to use red beacons, but hundreds of vehicles, including those of IAS officers, legislators, politicians, university vice-chancellors, district judges, panchayat presidents and religious leaders, sport beacons without permission.

Police officials said it also posed a security threat. "A criminal can gain access to places using the beacon," said an official. Cracking down, however, was tough as a policeman wrongfully stopping a VVIP could land in serious trouble.

The Madras high court last March directed the police to seize vehicles using red beacons without authorization. The first bench, comprising Chief Justice M Y Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam, issued an interim order on the basis of a public interest litigation petition filed by D Kalaiarasu, a Coimbatore-based advocate. The court also directed the police to remove unauthorized beacon lights. The bench said bureaucrats, senior police officers and department heads, including district collectors, registrar general of the high court, district judges, superintendent of police and secretaries to the government, can use amber lights while on duty.
