Brisbane's Gateway Bridge is in the process of being duplicated.
The duplication will double the crossing's capacity from 6 to 12 lanes
Completion should be in 2011.

Is the bridge really SO steep or is it just an illusion?

I think it is pretty darned steep though it doesn't feel it when you're on it. The Auckland Harbour Bridge is the same, you take a photo before you reach it and it looks incredibly steep but you don't feel it that much when driving up it.

That's how you construct a road with a futuristic view. Now there is room to add another lane without widening the overall roadway. That can save you a lot of trouble later. If you narrow the shoulder, you can even construct 2x5 lanes, at least it got the looks of it.

I wonder if those guardrails could keep a truck on the right side...

it looks sharp zoomed in from afar but it's designed for exiting at 110km/h. Same as your typical exit in the US ie: no deceleration lane.

Wire barriers are pretty strong (and flexible) but I think a truck could crash through if it hit at a sharp angle. These so called ''cheese cutter'' barriers are hell for motorcyclists. They will tear up and dismember a body as has been the case before.
The Cheese Cutters were introduced in the late 1980s and have been extensively used since. Personally I prefer concrete barriers

From the pictures, you can also tell that it's not purely a cost saving exercise because they're using regular concrete barriers on the other side of each carriageway.

With the wide median the choice usually goes to wire barriers as well. I estimate at least 15m from centreline to centreline here

With such a huge capacity increase, to me it would seem prudent to mark each the bridges for five lanes and a shoulder. If a wreck or breakdown occurs there things must get very messy very quickly,
