No. The width is determined by volume so a freeway/motorway in Australia can have anything from 2 lanes upwards per direction.
3-3 and 4-4 would be the most common in Melbourne. 2-2 and 3-3 the most common in Sydney.

Nearly all long distance Freeways are 2-2 and often include at-grade intersections out in the country aswell.

I find it very odd how Sydney has less lanes then Melbourne even though Sydney has more population? Are there any reasons?

Yep, Melbourne is incredibly road friendly whereas Sydney isn't quite as road friendly. It shows in the PT usage statistics between the two cities too (with Sydney being rather a lot higher).

In a nut shell.

They are also widening the Monash Fwy to 4-4 over a distance of 30km so 4-4 will certainly be the typical width in Melbourne once thats done with the 3-3s in the minority.

They are also widening this section of the Westgate as you can see.

It's not really being widened in the sense that there will be any more capacity (which is a good thing) but they're basically rebuilding two interchanges to eliminate a dangerous weave - a lot of traffic enters the West Gate from the Bolte Bridge, ending up in one of the three lanes on the left, but to continue down the M1, you must be on one of the two (sometimes three) rightmost lanes.

All the other lanes are exits for citybound traffic. The line markings are supposed to tell you when to merge but in reality, no one follows them, and it still doesn't eliminate any weaving.

Quite a coincidence eh?
My one was taken Monday last week.
Nothing much has changed in the last 2 years from the looks except it was a little greener last week

Yes. i thought it was more of a question of tidying up the weave between the Bolte and Montague St. A single white line isnt much of a carriageway division.

Sheash, that's right on the Southbank isn't it? That's quite impressive, though it'll scar the area immensely won't it?

it's behind the exhibition and conference centres. From the riverbank, that freeway is pretty much hidden by buildings and shops. It'll only scar the hearts n minds of the usual anti-progression, pro-caveman lifestyle NIMBYs and Greenies. With luck, the whole thing will fall on top of 'em.

Can't wait till it's finished.
