More Peninsula Link - TV news item

This is a brief news article about Peninsula Link which was shown on local TV news a few days ago. It includes some nice views of the road and an explanation of the route. The road is expected to open by the end of January.

Wow... some of the scenery on those Aussie roads are just impressive! I like what I see of the Australian motorway network! Nice to know I am not alone with my curiosity of roads from around the world!

Peninsula Link opened the other day, it's an untolled freeway in Melbourne's South East bypassing the Satellite city of Frankston and connecting Eastlink with the Mornington Peninsula Freeway.

The next big freeway project for Melbourne will be the East West tunnel, connecting the Eastern Freeway to the Western Ring Road via a mammoth tunnel. The project has a lot of opposition as it runs through historic inner city Victorian areas, but it will provide a major second freeway link between the West and East of the city. The current M1 suffers from terrible traffic jams.

Sydney has also launched an ambitions plan to build huge tunnels connecting freeways in the city's core. The project is known as West Connex.

Unfortunately not; Tasmania does not really have the population or the density to build a major highway. There is talk of long term plan to duplicate the main highway between Hobart and Launceston but the current State Government is not overly interested in building roads. A year or two ago the Brighton Bypass and Transport Hub opened just north of Hobart. There is a plan to build a replacement Bridgewater Bridge over the Derwent River at the northern entrance to the city, but not sure when this will be built. Apart from that, bypasses here and there is all that Tasmania builds.

Tasmania does have nearly 100km of freeway/motorway grade road (they just aren't designated/ signed as such), the longest being a section of the Bass Highway from Sulphur Creek to east of Devonport (41km).
I maybe wrong, but I thought that was highest km's of freeway/motorway per capita of any Australian state.

No, the south western freeway coming out of Sydney is i think, but the Bass hwy between Devtown and Sulphur creek just east of Burnie would come close. it does have an at grade intersection at Leith.
Tasmania doesn't really need anymore freeways. its already got the Tasman highway from the Hobart CBD to the the airport roundabout exit, which most of it is actual freeway with speed limits of 110km/h, then its got the Midland hwy south of Launie that is basically freeway with almost no at grades, the southern outlet in Hobart and then some others around Launie(i cant really think the names)

I was talking about total kms for the state not a single route.
I would think the M1 from Tweed Heads to Cooroy would be Australia's longest continuous freeway/motorway grade road (the Hume Fwy would be but has too many at grade interesections to be considered a continuous freeway)

I was trying to make out the freeways on this satellite photo of Melbourne. You can make out the Westgate bridge quite easily, but the Monash and Ring Road are a blur amongst the suburban sprawl.

The original plan for Melbourne's freeway network, roughly 60 years old. Maybe 1/3 was built.

I was about to say, if 1969 is 60 years ago I should be retiring about now.

The M1 in Queensland is actually made up of 3 different motorways (Pacific, Gateway and Bruce) it's just the route number.

That's my understanding anyway, could be wrong.
