great photos from kiwikass of Perth/WA roads and mw123 of NSW hwys! Thanks!

I've been on the Federal Hwy near Canberra and especially enjoy the 10km or so beside Lake George.

Did anyone notice on the plaque on the rock in above photo that both the Federal Minister and NSW State Minister opening the carriageway share the same name?

This is one of my favourite places to drive in Australia... Love the massive engineering work cutting the road through that rock.

Generally driving in Australia's rural areas can be very monotonous with hours and hours of driving through scrubby bushland often with little views.

But the F3 from Sydney to Newcastle through the national parks around the Hawkesbury River is an awesome drive, and probably one of the most picturesque Freeways I've been on anywhere in the world... It does get a little boring further up towards Newcastle however and there are of course plenty of other even better non-freeway roads to drive on elsewhere in the world.

Newcastle Inner City Bypass

Bypass opening next week, expressway soon

The Shortland-to-Sandgate bypass will be opened to traffic next Thursday and the Hunter Expressway will follow in March.

NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay made the announcements yesterday when he unveiled a plaque on the $143million project.

The 1.8-kilometre bypass will link Maitland Road at Hexham with the Jesmond roundabout and is designed to ease traffic congestion in the area.

Stuart Highway, Northern Territory

Open Speed Trial – drive to conditions

A one year open speed trial will commence on 1 February 2014 on a 204 km section of the Stuart Highway north of Alice Springs to just south of Barrow Creek.

An unrestricted speed limit means you should drive at speeds that would keep yourself and other road users safe at all times.

Regardless of the presence or absence of a nominated speed limit, dangerous driving is a serious traffic offence and can put you and other road users at risk.

You should drive safely, to your own capability, the capability of your vehicle and the road conditions.

Press release: http://transport.nt.gov.au/safety/ro...en-speed-trial

I always wonder why it seems those signs are located in middle of nowhere, instead of, say 500 m in front of the last gas station... unless the gas station is just outside the photo...

These signs would be on the outskirts of these service towns with petrol stations. That sign appears to be as you are leaving Yulura, heading east towards WA. It is a small town near Uluru, i.e. this:

... hence the scenery. The town more or less exists for the visitors (hotels, etc.).

Heading West, I guess ... Anyway, I have never fully understood why these signs appear just AFTER petrol stations. If you consider yourself affected, you would have to turn around and return to town. This does not only occur when you stand on the verge of an Outback track without any petrol service at all, but just as well on a main road like the Stuart Highway.

Not that this ever leads to real problems on the empty roads of the NT, but it would be so much more practicable to post the distance to the next petrol station as you approach a particular town with a petrol station. It would be the approach that is pretty common in Europe, where you get a sign that gives advance warning for one petrol station and immediately highlights the distance to the subsequent services.

I think these signs are just a reminder. You don't just drive into the outback without some decent preparations of where the gas stations are and what the distances are. In Europe you can easily drive until your tank is 7/8th empty, but this doesn't work in Australia or Canada where services are few and far apart.

How well are these roadhouses equipped for say, truckers? Do they have wifi / showers / repair shops, etc?

I think it would be best to put such signs before and after gas stations/towns. Those red signs look too 'screaming' to put them before gas stations, so I would put just a small sign like in Europe. OTOH, something in the town may distract you before you reach a gas station (even if it's very close), so you need those red signs after towns as well. Another unfortunate event happens if you turn from the main road before a gas station and return to it after the gas station, so you miss it.
