Adelaide’s Northern Connector

During Tony Abbott’s final day as Prime minister, he stood with South Australia premier Jay Wetherill to announce $985m for the Northern Connector motorway project, a 15km highway that links the existing Northern Expressway (M20) to the top of South Road, at the recently completed Superway (A13). The corridor includes a parallel rail component, but this has been deferred for the time being. This project is particularly good for the city’s northern industrial suburbs and port in the north west as it removes freight traffic off the arterial roads; and by linking M20 and A13 it becomes one long continuous highway.

Project features include:
• Six lane motorway full length, signposted 110km/h
• Four road interchanges
• 16km footpath for cyclists and pedestrians
• Construction to start next January and completed in 2019

Interesting I think how it is 3 lanes essentially exiting Tonkin to go onto Leach but, Tonkin through that section reverts back to 2 lanes. I think that this is a tad short sighted. It would have been better to keep Tonkin at 3 lanes south bound.

The overpass is now starting to take shape here

Looks like the abutments for the overpass are now in place and what will be the temporary west bound lanes and future off ramp is also now being built

Reid / Mitchell
It will be interesting to see what further reconfiguration happens to this interchange in the future, but it will have to be tied in with Reid / Erindale and also the spur onto Balcatta Rd at Reid / Mitchell

Tonkin / Dunreath interchange seems really weird. Why not just a trumpet, the geometry would not be good but still way better than a roundabout... unless they plan an extension of Dunreath the other way?

An off-set stack with a diamond interchange and a grade separated bike path cutting through it all, very neat.

The bike path runs along the whole length of the M7 (running from the top left corner). One of its key features.

Western Distributor, Melbourne, Victoria

Western Distributor Project

The Victorian Government will partner with Transurban to build the $5.5 billion Western Distributor Project, which includes the Monash Freeway Upgrade and upgrades to Webb Dock.

Premier Daniel Andrews, Treasurer Tim Pallas and Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan today released the Victorian Government's reference business case, which shows the project stacks up financially, delivering a benefit of $1.30 for every dollar invested.

The Western Distributor will deliver immediate travel time savings of up to 20 minutes a day, take 6,000 trucks off the West Gate Bridge, and create 5,600 new jobs. The estimated $5.5 billion project will:

* Widen the West Gate Freeway from 8 to 12 lanes between the M80 and Williamstown Road
* Build a tunnel under Yarraville and a second river crossing over the Maribyrnong
* Construct an elevated road along Footscray Road with direct links to the Port of Melbourne
* Create the longest managed motorway system in Australia from Geelong to Pakenham
* Build 4.5km of new cycling and pedestrian paths including completion of the Federation Trail

(...)

Construction on Webb Dock will begin this month, the Monash Freeway Upgrade section will start construction in 2016, construction on the Western Distributor begins in early 2018, and the full project will be completed by 2022.
Full press release: http://www.vic.gov.au/news/western-d...r-project.html

The Western Distributor is a downgraded version of the earlier planned 'East West Link' that saw its demise after the 2014 state elections.

Pacific Highway

The 17 kilometer segment of motorway between Tintenbar and Ewingsdale opens to traffic 'progressively' over the next day. It is planned to be in near-full service by Friday morning, except for the Ewingsdale interchange.

It would be cool to get Australia in the stickied threads. Do you guys have a list of ongoing projects that could be used as the starting point for it?

Great Ocean Road Bushfires

During the past week a part of Victoria’s iconic Great Ocean Road is closed to motorists in peak holiday season due to large bushfires. So far, about 115 homes have been lost across the towns of Wye River and Separation Creek; however very fortunately no lives lost. Although the bushfires started about two weeks ago, they flared up on Christmas Day due to strong hot winds then that night a change in wind direction kept it difficult for firefights to gain control. The fire remains out of control. The popular beach town of Lorne remains on alert but so far the fire has not seriously threatened the town and the town has not been evacuated.

Bruce Highway upgrade

I found a project that blows my mind in terms of cost. It's a 7 kilometer segment of the Bruce Highway from Caloundra Road to the Sunshine Motorway. It will be widened from four to six lanes. The cost? $ 1134 million. That's $ 162 million per kilometer? What constraints incur such a huge cost, considering the existing highway runs through mostly undeveloped terrain? As I understand they want to make if possible for a future extension to eight lanes (which doesn't fit in the existing median), but it still seems very expensive.

Well, if you check all the works described in the project page that quoted yourself, it is a bit more extensive than just "7 km widening":

- it says bruce highway will be reconstructed, so that's likely different than just widening but really doing new carriageways (or mostly new)
- it sounds like a partial reconstruction as well for the interchange with sunshine motorway (e.g new bridges for Bruce over Sunshine, and many new ramps) and the southern interchange at Caloundra road (e.g. a 4-laned bridge over Bruce, and new ramps, providing grade-separation)
- in addition, there is a bunch of other side-roads that are extended and reconfigured, e.g. the western service road.

So, I guess the total package might still be expensive - but all construction work in Australia seems to be..
Plus, it seems to contain really many new bridges.
