I think Sydney has a rather small motorwaynetwork, considering the city´s size.

It does. However alot has been built since 1990 when there was only about 30km of motorway in the entire urban area. Many of the problems with developing the network has to do with the wholesale release of motorway development corridors by the New South Wales government in the late 1970s and early 1980s (one of the corridors went through the Premier's electorate). Because of the absence of corridors new motorways have to be contructed largely underground with the inherrent high contruction costs involved. Motorway development is always a very contentious issue in Sydney (as is also the case in Adelaide).
Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Canberra have far more elaborate motorway/arterial road networks.

I'm noticing that the pavement on Australian highways is generally very good!

I wish Canadian freeways were that well maintained.

BTW, I always understood that the Little River Band was from Melbourne and got their name from a freeway sign.............that must be the one.

I thought so, but when seeing this picture, where miles seems to be more important on this sign, you could think different.

It the name of the road, just like the name of 90 mile beach and other places. You can't exactly make the name '146.6 kilometre straight'.

These places were probably named when we used imperial and its a bit hard to change them now.

Kilometer(s) = American English. And btw, 90 mi × 1.609344 = ~144.8 km.

The true length of the road is probably 146.6 km. I don't think it was built to be exactly 90 miles.

Wow, abot 150km dead straight. That's about half my country from north to south. And that sign further away, says 100 if im correct. That's in kilometers I presume?

[edit] sorry, didn't read well, you use km's

it's 110km/h but I seriously doubt anyone would obey it on a 140km straight in the middle of nowhere.
