Beautiful pics from the fifth most inhabited municipal district of Brasil, Belo Horizonte. Definitely it's a very progressive city that in no more than 110 years old turned one of the urban areas with the best high quality of life in Latin America.

Thank you to present us this city here!

Impressive due to the sheer ammount of development and size, but too many ugly buildings IMO...I don't see how people could consider a city with so many boring concrete blocks beautiful, it just shows you how beauty is in the eye of the beholder.....it looks like benidorm on steroids. Yes, there are some nice areas, but the ammount concrete apartment blocks is crazy and there seems to be a lack of good design.... You have your work cut out for you...you will need to gradually replace those buildings as your economy grows...they won't win any beauty awards. They are overbearing...think how beautiful it could have been without those buildings, or if they had been done in a humane style rather than a brutalist one. I dont consider cities beautiful just because they are massive.. its not quantity of buildings but ist the quality of the urbanscape...give me a beautifully intact small town over that city anyday.

Hey Aquablue you are too much north american!!!! We are not looking for the kind of american cities modernism! If you could compare Latin American cities are, close to some mediterranean cities in style, than to the North American cities (in fact, down here we think that the United States have only two real cities that deserve the title of CITY: New York and San Francisco). The rest are only Parking Lots! Take a look on Houston on Google Earth, for exemple! It's awfull!!! I'm sorry, we're are building cities here not only freeways!!!! There are in BH moderns buildings wich would satisfy your typical North American taste, but you'll find here a real respect for the citiy's past!

I know, that is what I was saying. I was reading about Salvador a month ago and read this in Wiki...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvador%2C_Brazil

Salvador is the safest major city in Brazil (and one of the safest in Latin America), with a rate of only 12 murders per 100,000 inhabitants (almost four times less than on the city of Sao Paulo, for example)

Tourists must be aware, though, that they will be the preferential targets of the pick pockets and thieves, and hence should dress like the locals do. During daylight, walking alone should not be a problem, especially on the upper class neighbourhoods and touristic spots. At night, walking in groups is the best thing to do.

I asked about it in the Brasil forum but nobody seemed to really have intreast or have a good answer but I was surprised and impressed.

The theme of Violence in the Americas is a very serious thing indeed (I said in the Americas and not only in Latin America). In fact I think that the only safe country in this part of the world maybe is Canada. I think that no one can say that Los Angeles, New Orleans, Miame or even New York are safe cities as you can't say the same about Rio, São Paulo, Mexico City, Caracas, Buenos Aires, Lima, Santiago, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia or any other big city in Latin America. Of course some cities (Rio, Recife and Los Angeles for exemple) are more violents than the others, and everybody (not only the tourist, but the locals too) must be very careful (day or night) and must avoid to walk carring values in the streets.

I agree, and still even with higher levels of crimes then we would like they are cities in the America's I woldn't miss going back to over and over again for the world and prefer over a many a "safe city".

No matter what the gang situation in Rio for instance it will never not let me beleive it is not one of the most beautifull and intriguing cities in the world.

Ah, I hope you get a chance some day. Brasil was my first country to see outside the U.S., was liberating and a bit daunting.

I only went to Rio, Petropolis, and Buzios when I was in Brasil but would love to go back some day and maybe drive the coast from northeast to southeast.

When you come back try to scape from the sameness. Try to reach the heartland. Place like Chapada Diamantina in Bahia, Chapada dos Guimarães in Mato Grosso, Historics cities in Minas Gerais, Chapada dos Veadeiros in Goiás, The Pantanal in Mato Grosso do Sul, Southers States like Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. Try to throw away the foreigner fixed ideia of CARNAVAL, FOOTBALL and stuffs like that. You'll find a far more interesting country. And you know, in Brazil americans are viewed as equals, nothing more nothing less.
