According to one of the main newspapers in Panama, the project has been officially canceled and will supposedly be replaced by something smaller due to budget shortcomings, leaving Los Faros de Panama as Panama's only supertall for now. VERY sad news.

I had my hopes for this scraper after the cancellation of the Palacio tower and now this. Absolute bloody travesty, all the best looking supertalls seem to get cancelled in Panama at the last second due to financial reasons, this is the second supertall after the Palacio beauty to get cancelled, are they trying to wind people up? Panama could have done with a building taller than the ESB in NYC and would have boosted itself amongst the cities holding the top 30 tallest buildings.

The newspaper La Prensa gave two reasons why it cannot be built:
1. Much of the building presold at $1,000/sq m and now the price of
materials and labor are higher.
2. They do not have the technical expertise in Panama to build that high.

Article below.

Panamá, sábado 23 de junio de 2007
‘boom’ inmobiliario.empresa devuelve dinero a compradores.

Yes, it's a shame this was cancelled. Mostly to blame is the market rises in prices of raw materials like concrete and steel.
It is a different ballgame to build that high, and above 65 to 70 stories, costs rise dramatically per salelable square foot and difficult to recoup in the residential market.

I'm so disappointed by this news. I loved this building and was looking forward to seeing it come to fruition. I feel cheated.

it's a bit of a shame really when you take into context such a large building will constitute unjustifiable costs such as floorplates and the rising costs for space and construction materials.

As far as technical expertise this is no 2, the Palacio was equally complex to construct but I don't know where that stands now although it was mentioned that was going through a redesign, I just hope Panama gets that beauty, city none more deserving.
