Raft foundations

Raft foundations are used to spread the load from a structure over a large area, normally the entire area of the structure. They are used when column loads or other structural loads are close together and individual pad foundations would interact.

A raft foundation normally consists of a concrete slab which extends over the entire loaded area. It may be stiffened by ribs or beams incorporated into the foundation.

Raft foundations have the advantage of reducing differential settlements as the concrete slab resists differential movements between loading positions. They are often needed on soft or loose soils with low bearing capacity as they can spread the loads over a larger area.

Unfoutunately you are mistaken on this point, the raft foundation will be an actual raft, due to the enormous amount of water that will be surrounding the Burj Dubai. (Businss bay, the artificial lake etc.) here's a picture to prove my point, taken with the Palm Deira in the foreground.

Don't open your window!

To damp out the vibrations caused by 190-kilometre-an-hour winds swirling around the building’s pinnacle, it will be made of poured concrete mixed with blast furnace slag and microsilicates, a material almost as strong as cast iron but more resistant to vibration, and will numerous setbacks and wings, creating 18 different sections, each of which disrupts the wind differently.

seems like what we have seen in the site pics really is only the core!!!

this is from the som website, check bold text

The super tall Burj Dubai will be the centerpiece of a large scale mixed-use development being developed by Emaar Properties PJSC of Dubai, which will combine residential, commercial, hotel, entertainment, shopping and leisure outlets with open green spaces, water features, pedestrian boulevards, a shopping mall and a tourist-oriented old town.

The design of Burj Dubai is derived from the geometries of the desert flower, which is indigenous to the region, and the patterning systems embodied in Islamic architecture. It combines historical and cultural influences with cutting edge technology to achieve a high-performance building which will set the new standard for development in the Middle East and become the model for the future of the city.

The tower is composed of three elements arranged around a central core. As the tower rises from the flat desert base, setbacks occur at each element in an upward spiraling pattern, decreasing the mass of the tower as it reaches toward the sky. At the top, the central core emerges and is sculpted to form a finishing spire. A Y-shaped floor plan maximizes views of the Persian Gulf.

The design was selected as the winning entry of an invited design competition for the tower held by Emaar Properties PJSC of Dubai early 2003. Construction started in January 2004 and will be completed at the end of 2009.

Oh my good... it will be soo huge...
you remember this pic dazz made with the tower on the core / the floor plate ( we did not know at that time)?

It looked soo big, compared to SZR Towers or Emirates Tower .
Now imagine this was way too small, as the 3 Elements were considered as floor plate by dazz!
Now think about this picture will look like if what we see now is just the core...

Post this in World Forum immidiately please!!

I dont think what we have seen so far is just the core of this building. The photo and plan originally posted by Aural INK (below) clearly shows that what has already been built conforms perfectly with the floor plan issued by SOM. The central core is the hexagonal shaped structure defined by the rebar where the 3 elements converge. It may seem smaller than could be expected for a building of this scale but believe me...its a heck of a big core! Also don't forget that each wing has its own core which is shown on the plan too so an awful lot of the floorplace is going to be eaten up by the service cores.
