Thanks, in advance, for the infos.
T2 is located east of the Airport Express station, actually away from the airplanes.

It sits right across from the main entrance to T1, but separated by the AEL station and the ground transportation centre.

Thank goodness the people mover has full access to T2. Otherwise it would be a disaster and would never have been approved.

I don't think so, since these stores are not in restricted area.
Unless you want to buy wine, liquor or tobacco, it doesn't make a big different anyways since there is no sales tax in HK.

I think it's a bit troublesome if you are buying a lot of stuff. You still have to go through immigration.

Terminal 2 to ease load at airport
Hong Kong Standard
Friday, February 23, 2007

Up to 15 percent of all air travelers leaving Hong Kong from next month will pass through the airport's new passenger terminal, the Airport Authority said.

Terminal 2 is part of an expansion program designed to cater to an estimated increase of 10 million passengers over the next five years, airport management director Howard Eng said Thursday. "This is the result of the activities in Hong Kong and the whole Pearl River Delta."

Eng said passenger volume had risen from 31 million when the airport opened in 1998 to 45 million last year.

Terminal 2 will handle 10 to 15 percent of departing passengers, he said.

Oasis Hong Kong and Emirates will be among the first carriers to operate from the new terminal next month.

Six other airlines are also expected to relocate their check-in counters from the current passenger terminal over the next three months.

Passengers will be able to check-in and complete immigration and security formalities at Terminal 2 before taking the Automated People Mover to their boarding gates in the main terminal.

The new passenger terminal, which cost about HK$2 billion, has 56 check- in counters that can be expanded to 112, its own customs and immigration hall, tour coach area, car park, retail and dining and entertainment facilities and covers an area of 35,000 square meters.

To cope with growing passenger demand, the Airport Authority last year approved more than HK$7 billion in new works, including a new satellite terminal, improved arrival and immigration systems and baggage facilities.

A feasibility study will also start this year regarding the construction of a third runway to cope with expected demand in 12 to 13 years, Eng said.

The new passenger terminal, a three- minute walk from the existing terminal, is also accessible by the Airport Express. MTR Corp has extended its facilities at the Airport Station, including the building of a new 230-meter Platform 3, located directly opposite Platform 1, to serve passengers using the new terminal.

The new platform will be fitted with platform screen doors and a customer service when check-in services open at the new terminal next month.

MTRC head of operations Wilfred Lau Cheung-man said additional signs, public announcements and LCD screens will provide departure airline information and their check-in counters.

First time I've heard of a terminal which has only check in and no arrivals. Interesting.

But does that mean there are more departures than arrivals in HK? Cause it sounds weird that HKIA needs more capacity for check in than the existing terminal can support and yet arrivals can take it.

no! the capacity is the same but you won't have to wait a long time in line to check-in like JFK, LAX or Dallas. personaly I hate waiting at the check-in line. the whole idea is less check-in waitting time and more time you can shop blow you money away!

no they're also building a satellite departure terminal which will only handle narrow-body aircrafts. and there'll be an addition of around 10 departure gates.

Probably good foresight to better suit itself for the probable "domestic" flights i the future to the mainland.
