The Suburban Rail System of Kolkata UA is pretty extensive. Somehow the stations on the Howrah - Burdwan, Howrah - Kharagpur are much cleaner (and have a rural feel) than the Sealdah side system.

Offbeat..

Grain of Salt is Kolkata's (and maybe India's) biggest varied cuisine Restaurant with Bar, Banqueting and allied services covering over 25000 sq feet of area in the heart of Kolkata's business cum residential hub. It has a Franchise relationship with Master Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, a celebrity Chef of India and Khana Khazana fame.

The property comprises of a 140 seater restaurant, 50 seater bar, 24 seater coffee & cigar lounge and a 150 seater banquet facility - covering over 14000 sq feet. An open terrace concept banqueting facility for 500 pax has been provided for on the terrace of the building covering about 10000 sq feet.

Kolkata saw the opening of another biggie last month. Sourav’s — The Food Pavilion at 20 G Park Street has four segments — One Day, Over Boundary, Maharaj and Prince of Cal. The restaurant has been designed by Mumbai–based architect, Kapil Bhalla, keeping in mind the four aspects of Sourav’s life — Friendship, Growing Pangs, Family and Stardom & Fame.

One Day — The Coffee Shop — has a joyous ambience and a menu of quick food and aromatic coffee. Incredible colours and a décor replete with the ecstatic moments of victory and camaraderie catch the spirit of one-day cricket. One Day can accommodate 110 covers and will be open from 7 a.m. till midnight.

Over Boundary — The Multi-cuisine Restaurant — has 70 covers. It illustrates the vigorous journey of Sourav as a cricketerFeaturing a clear kitchen, this floor brings to life the experimental years of Sourav. The all-stir-fry concept of this second floor outlet gives you a chance to play with combinations, spices and sauces to rustle-up authentic delicacies or make a slight drift from well-travelled paths. Over Boundary will be open for lunch from 12 noon to 3 p.m. and from 7 p.m. till midnight.

Maharaj is a Indian vegetarian restaurant. The 70-seater restaurant promises to provide a complete family experience from 12 noon to 3 p.m. for lunch and 7.30 p.m. till 10 p.m. for dinner.

Prince of Cal — The Lounge Bar in the fourth floor — holds the essence of cricket, laced with the glitterati of stardom, dispersing an illusive spatial quality that is almost unreal. The choice of music, the bar and the spreads, the wines and the rich spirit complete the experience of eclectic success. Prince of Cal will remain open from noon till midnight

Wah Janaab...!

Someone really has a good taste in aesthetics and design, although the colors get a bit too repetitive and dull in places. A bit of Japanese Tea House feeling....

I must hand it to Kolkata; it's a city capable of springing a few pleasant surprises!

The terrace of the restaurant reminds you how the owner ran out of money, while furnishing the inside. Your local marriage hall, it looks like!

It's all about lighting isn't it!

Good to know that Indian design concepts are maturing at an international pace.

However, it's still to be seen if these restaurants are commercially successful or not. I had been to one of these types in Mumbai last year, called Blue Sky or Blue Room something...(located at Shopper's Stop Andheri West). The decorations and furnishings were good, but the place was damn expensive. And, the food and service was actually mediocre.....

I absolutely love modern Indian home designs!

Their reflections of the distinctive architecture of the region they come from in India make for some very exciting and unique architecture

Suncity, if you have enough pictures, do you think you can start a thread on that topic? With a focus on the modern Indian regional home/bungalow architecture?

Nice pic of the strand there Suncity ! Although the ugly barges anchored in the middle of the river are an eyesore. btw, the white structure floating on the river near the shore (towards the left of the picture) looks like the floating hotel they brought in last year - any idea if they have started operations yet ?
