Nice, guys. So the section Wien-Linz has the utmost priority, well it´s logical as they are two biggest Austrian cities. As far as I understand from the map, HSR network will contain new stretches, like Wien-St. Polten as well as upgraded ones. Innsbruck is getting nice connection too.
Just curious, the section named Semmering basistunnel has the lenghth of 30 km, not the tunnel itself, or are there really plans for the 30km HSR tunnel?

Yes, Wien-Linz is beeing heavily upgraded, except for the more mountainuous parts near Vienna where the current route is much to curved. The stretch between Vienna and St.Pölten is basically a 13km long tunnel in the east plus the rest new built on flatland a bit to the north.

Its a small thumbnail but you can see how the new route goes to the north to avoid the mountains where the old route goes (black). Vienna as well as St.Polten are outside of the pic:

Now that you mention Innsbruck - they actually forgot the Brennerbasistunnel going straight south from Innsbruck far into Italy and allowing 250km/h.

Yes, there are Plans for a Tunnel for - as another source tells - 200km/h Vmax. The revised routing is 27km.

Still most interesting is the connection eastwards from Vienna as there are 4 routes to Bratislava to be upgraded/finished/etc. and it is still unknown which one of them will be upgraded to high-speed. Or even a new one will be built as this graph by the Association of Trade is showing all 4 routes and suggests a new high-speed one?

Great info.
Well, I guess, the timetable for the Wien-Linz track is updated almost every year, getting more and more sections opened.

The Brenner Basistunnel will be serious competition for St. Gotthard, definitely from the Tulfes portal. And Semmering tunnel, probably the second longest HSR tunnel will not lack very much behind. Sometimes the tunnels are constructed along the highways, so I thought the line could follow S6 Semmering expressway, but that could be the case /HSL following the motorway/ mostly in flat areas.
Overall, very impressive projects.

Few thoughts to the Vienna Bratislava railway connections:
Schnellbahn to Wolsthal /blue/ and its prolongation to Petržalka is IMO the minor issue. It could be done in relatively short period. But now Bratislava public transport drives directly to Wolfsthal railway station, so it could be not that urgent. Turning it into the HSR is IMHO not possible, tha nature - urban rail network, lot of stops, etc.

The question is the southern railway connection through Parndorf. With a construction of Gotzendorf branch and on Slovak side with completition of railway connection of Bratislava airport the airports will have good railway connection. If this will be HSL is the question, probably the bypasses like Kittsee station should be then constructed.

Marchfelder Ast we discussed and it has advantage, that it is before the modernisation. So the speeds of HSR could be realistic.

If the wholy new route would be constructed, north of the Danube is more appropriate terrain - flat, so the costs could be lower.

These are just some ideas how it possibly could be performed.

Regarding the map posted by sotavento. There is a new High speed railway on it from Copenhagen northbound into Sweden in operation by 2020. This is a too optimistic timetable. Sweden plans to build a new high speed railway Stockholm-Gothenborg over Jönköping-Linköping, having 320 km/h as top speed. The first part will be Gothenborg-Borås and Linköping-Södertälje. They have not started construction, but will do around 2010-2012, and will be finished around year 2020. After that the rest Borås-Jönköping-Linköping will be built, finished probably about 2025. There are plans to build a new high speed railway Jönköping-Helsingborg-Copenhagen after that. But this is not decided and not planned in detail. It is not likely to be finished in 2030. The Danes seem not to be too entausiastic also. The tunnel under Öresund will be very expensive.

There's some inaccuracy. This map is better for the Baltics:

Is it just me who looks at this map and thinks the Eurostar is screaming to go to Cologne/Frankfurt?

A few, well, due to the way they build railways in Spain it is a bit complicated to draw I guess.

For example, the HSR line between Murcia and Almeria is now picking up pace, a few weeks ago the government awarded construction of a 7km tunnel halfway between the two cities, so now some 40km out of ~200 have been awarded for construction.

On the Madrid-portuguese border you now have 78km UC between Badajoz and Cáceres.

The line to Galicia is also picking up pace, some ~230km out of the 400km have now been awarded for construction.

This week a few sections north of Valladolid have been placed in bidding process for construction, you can see the maps in this thread (post 851)

Some "minor" news from portugal:

North Line ... the beginning of the work on the 1st grey area north of lisboa.
- they are demolishing buildings nearthe railway and a 2km "river side" pedestrian area with 22m will be built ... the plan is to insert a 3rd railway line and segregate that section of track ... the speed probably will be of 160km/h in the future (main station at VFxira and most of the express trains actualy stop there).
