Its the central Water Catchment Area. While Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is right, the photo taken is more of the Seletar/ Sembawang Hills area.

Read that Singapore is the other city in the world besides Rio de Janeiro, to have virgin rainforest encircled by urban areas.
Is Seletar/Sembawang Hills part of the central catchment? The central catchment can be seen here as the expanse of green in the horizon ---->

Anyway, i have this other Google earth image i took with the path my family took around Macritchie some time in December marked out. Pretty awesome. Also, i marked out where my house is roughly for all you internet voyeurs out there with extremely bad taste. ![]()

Macritchie. Also marked out are the treetops walk, ranger's stations, jelutong observation tower (i think that's how it's spelt) and the abandoned Japanese Shinto Shrine, if you can figure out which is which.
EDIT: Oops sorry. the jelutong observation tower is not marked out.

"What a long journey, how long does it take?"
You're joking, right? Singapore is a very small island - only 27 x 15 miles. You can cycle it in no time We used to do that trip weekly when I was at school in Changi.

Not very long. I'd say the hold thing was a little more than 8km, including all the twists and turns. We were walking very slowly, stopping to take pictures and spent a long time at the observation tower just sitting around, so we took about 2 hours. Frankly, though, we could have finished it much faster had we not stopped so much.

Well, true; it's not that great a distance, but for someone who doesn't typically go walking too often it's actually quite significant. Think about it. I don't travel that far to school on a bus, let alone walking in the heat of the jungle. A friend of mine said the same thing. Apparently he used to go jogging there when he was in his school's cross-country team. I think he was kind'a missing the point. It was fun. Very interesting. Had my camera out all through the way.

I posted this photo in the Photo Cocktails forum. It was taken on the westernmost tip of the lake. There's a Japanese Shinto Shrine on the opposite bank but i never got a chance to see it.

cloudy day should be best for that....downside is...it may probably break out into a thunderstorm in that area!
maybe there can be some tourist attractions set in the midst of the catchment, to allow visitors to experience the tropical jungle up-close

Haha :-)
This is what we did last week with Chatelain... ![]() Started at Dobhy Gaut, went for lunch at Taka's Pepper Lunch, then to Orchard, Newton, then decided to go for dinner in Geylang and took MRT back from Kallang ;-) Weather was really good for walking and there's no jungle so I believe it must be a lot easier than the McRitchie reservoir path... Good walk, though :-) |

![]() I'd quite happily walk long distances as long as I am preoccupied with the scenery...which is what I usually do when taking pics ;-) |

I'll only be willing to walk around the cbd. Anyway, will the nature reserve remain "reserved" forever?

I once walked home from the Esplanades. Never figured out how far that is. I love walking. One of these days i'm going to walk to punggol. EDIT: Here's the route i took from the Esplanades to my home, via Orchard. Obviously it's not the shortest route. That's intentional. I'm going to do it again soon. I'll hop by Borders and Kinokuniya for some books too.

That is rather impressive :-)
I guess I could try this some day too, just that I always get confused as on how to go around Braddel/Toa Payoh without going Thomson which I don't like 'cause it's like walking next to the highway ;-) Well I need to do some planning some day. I've also done some very long walks in Paris and Kuala Lumpur. Actually in KL, not so sure how long it was, maybe the climate there make it feel long ;-) In Paris probably in the 12km range too, hehe :-) |
