London Euston Station - rebuild

London Euston Station is being rebuilt.

British Land favourite for Euston 4.2m sq ft scheme

Network Rail is poised to appoint British Land to rebuild Euston, one of the largest regeneration projects in London. It is understood hat Britain’s second-biggest property company is favourite in the final round of a bidding battle for the 15-acre project that has attracted most of the big names to the 4.2m sq ft scheme. The revamp will include new offices and shops as well as increasing the number of platforms from 18 to 20 or 21. The rail infrastructure company announced last October that it was in talks with Hammerson to redevelop Victoria Station and it will be inviting bids for Waterloo next year.

It certainly needs to be. At the moment it is horrid.
Hopefully its not just a refit of the existing building.

There was Network Rail promising to spend some cash on doing up Lime Street in Liverpool, ready for the Capital of Culture & guess what - yip, the cash has dwindled to almost nothing...

London! London! London! (Sorry guys - this is not meant in a regionalist way)

Is there really a 'business case' for this?

Adding very profitable shops and offices to a station that has 26+ million people coming through it per year. I think that's a pretty good business case.

Please don't let this be an opportunity lost.

Move the station back closer to Euston Road then fit in a bigger concourse and longer platforms. Could see Euston someday becoming the London terminal for High Speed 2 if built.

Needs a spectacular roof aswell.

Get ready to be disapointed. There will be no grand roof as that's where millions of square feet of offices and residential will be going. I very much doubt they will demolish the current towers in front of the station and build under the square. I agree it would make a whole lot of sense and would keep the option for a High Speed 2 terminus open. This is a capitalist country though and not a planned economy. Therefore this wont happen. There are simply not the people in jobs to even think about this, let alone secure planning. Sadly High Speed 2 wont even be discussed again for a minimum of 4 years. The lobbying of the past couple of years failed. Sorry, just being realistic. If you want to run for PM I'd vote for you though!

It needs some more waiting space on the concourse, why does the Manchester train always say "train being prepared" upto about 5 minutes before departure.

A pain.

well thats just the thing. network rail wont be paying for it the developer will which in return the developer (quite likely british land) will have the avilability to use the land above and around the station for the development of major office schemes. the case of liverpool was that it was relient on funding from network rail itself (always a recipe for disaster) and being a listed building does not have the flexibility of being able to rebuild privately

Ouch, what a slap in the face.

If that's it future then they may aswell sell the lower levels aswell for retail and try and somehow extend St Pancras & Paddington.

If I ever run for PM I'll let you know though.

Whilst the new proposal (which has been mentioned before) is an improvement on the current situation, it is far from decent. Just a slightly more modern version of what we currently have. I'd love developers to be a bit more creative and grand here and yes the arch being brought back in some form would be fantastic.

The current situation:

The current situation:

Basically it will just be a shopping centre with a railway station underneath it.

Wonder what that reminds me of?

I find that funny as well. Everyone always looking at the boards. Its like.......... go go go, running down the platform to get the first seat. In Manchester its already been in the station for about 2 hours, all chilled out and you can just walk on.

Infact I was stopped by the mets on the Euston platform because I had a United Shirt on and they asked me if there where any Bolton fans on the Train. Strange because there weren't. That was also the day before Arsenal played United at Old Trafford. That was a really fun day.

That picture isn't what it will look like- British Land , if they are confirmed to get the job will submit a scheme for a comprehensive development that would contain offices, residential & retail. 4.2m sq ft is a massive amount of space.

Like the recent announcement that Hammerson will redevelop London Victoria with 3 possible towers planned & the upcoming tender to redevelop Waterloo. Network rail are getting the developers to pay for the station upgrades by allowing them to develop over & around the stations. The same thing will happen with London Bridge. The large office development above the station will pay for most of the new station.
