Just ot mention this: Austria has some 1.600km of motorways. Croatia now has 1.050km, and the plan is to have 1.400km by the year 2009.

Bridge-tunnel Triest Bay (Savudrija/HR-Grado/I)
After the second tube of the Ucka-Tunnel in Istria is built by the 2010, it seems logical that a
northern stretch (single carriageway for the beginning) should be made to connect Rijeka and Umag via Buzet. See the map (violet).  Then a bridge-tunnel connection over the Triest Bay becomes very interesting (13 km subsea tunnel and 2x5 km viaducts on each side). The project has been proposed by a Croatian architect Kincl http://www.branko-kincl.com/project_detail.asp?id=96 . He himself presented it in Italy. According to some sources ( http://home.no.net/lotsberg/data/croatia/list.html ) a feasibility study is being done for the project.

The motorway to Split is truly gorgeous. The descent from the tunnel through the Velebit mtns. towards the sea is absolutely breathtaking.
