It is possible to reach D1/D3 from A3. If you're coming from east, at Lučko intersection just take the second right exit (to Zagreb) and then the right exit again http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=45.758...4&z=17&l=0&m=s

If you're coming from the west (A3 Bregana), at Lučko intersection there's the similar procedure: second right exit to Zagreb, and after that first right to Lučko (yellow sign). http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=45.757...8&z=17&l=0&m=s

It is a little bit complicated because you have to make many turns and go under the expressway, but just follow the yellow sign for town "Lučko" and you'll get to the D1

Anyway, I suppose that the beginning of the national road D1 to Split is just the border crossing Macelj. The motorway Zagreb-Macelj has been completed so that the old national road might be "overlayed" by the motorway in any section(Oroslavlje-Krapina bypass)?..
Yes, D1 goes from border crossing Macelj via Zagreb to Split. When A2 was built, they used some sections of old D1 to make motorway, so from the exit #5 (Zabok) to #3 (Krapina) the route of D1 is "overlayed" (it's seen on satellite view: http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=46.004...2&z=15&l=0&m=s ), but instead of that section they signed another road as D1, so you can go from SLO border to Zagreb without going on motorway

But this is probably better, if you're coming from A2. And this, if you're coming from Slovenian A2 (but then you're probably coming from Ljubljana, so it's better via Črnomelj).

i drove this second soluton once. not bad, but you have not open roads, you are in inhabitted place all the time.
third solution is poor. as you told, much more clever is Novo Mesto - Črnomelj - Karlovac

You mean NM - Črnomelj - Bosiljevo (not Karlovac). You can also go via Žužemberk instead of NM (Ljubljana - Ivančna Gorica - Žužemberk - Črnomelj - Bosiljevo). This route was preferred before there was a motorway between Ivančna Gorica and NM (2-lane "expressway" H1), but now it might be better via NM (although signs still direct you to Črnomelj via Žužemberk; I saw a lot of foreign cars on this road last week).

The third solution is good, if you're from Brežice.

Where going from Zagreb to Ljubljana can I buy the Slovenian toll vigenette? Maybe at Gradna rest area? Is it difficult there to find there the one week vignette?

you can buy it at any of Petrol gas stations if you catch some, you can buy it at Gradna, you can buy it at the border (it is not difficult, and is maybe the best way - there is enough space to park your car, and you cannot miss the selling point), and you can also buy it at first rest area in Slovenia (maybe 1 km after border, or even less, noone will fine you because of that)

I was in Croatia a few weeks ago, but didn't get to ride any of your amazing autoceste as we were sailing down from Koper. When just north of Dubrovnik we passed this bridge that carries the coastal route, D8, and I have a few questions:

When was it built? Looks fairly new to me, but could just as well be 20+ years old. Was there an earlier bridge crossing the bay or did the D8 follow the coast all the way along they bay further inland? And when (if?) the A1 reaches the Dubrovnik area, will it too pass this bridge?

I just love it when infrastructure like this sits so well in the landscape

that bridge was opened for traffic in 2002, so it is quite new, yes. that under it is actually estuary of extremely short river Ombla. before 2002 road D8 followed the coast of estuary and there was/is a little bridge over the source of the river some 5 km eastern from this bridge.
no, A1 will not pass over bridge. actually A1 (or expressway to Dubrovnik, whatever they build) will end in Osojnik and from there there will probably be the connection road to the bridge.
i think that is the first (and currently the only) cable stayed bridge in Croatia.
