New data on AADT and ASDT on croatian roads:
http://www.hrvatske-ceste.hr/UserDoc...F/BrPr2012.pdf

The most interesting part for me is on page 32 - biggest AADT/ASDT:

1. D8 in Stobreč 49.515 / 58.560
2. D8 in Solin 39.795 / 46.088
3. D30 in Velika Mlaka 38.244 / 36.425
4. A1 in Lučko - jug 30.235 / 53.658
5. A1 in Zdenina - jug 29.621 / 53.570
6. A1 in Jastrebarsko - jug 27.518 / 52.029
7. A7 in Rujevica - zapad 25.983 / 32.987

So, we can see that our most congested road (D8 around Split) isn't built with a proper standard. From Trogir to Solin it's a normal 2+2 highway with at-grade intersections (on some sections still 1+1), not even an expressway! Section Solin-Split-Stobreč is at least a 2+2 grade-separated highway. D30 is also an 2+2 highway with at-grade intersections... But works on D8 are going so slowly, and on the other hand we build some motorways for 2000 AADT (A5)

In fact this summer I didn't notice so much improvements after Vrgorac, nor on the A1 section Vrgorac/Mali Prolog nor on the D425 section Mali Prolog/Karamatići...

Are we sure that both sections will be opened in January 2014 as announced?

And what about the current section Karamatići/Čeveljuša, will it be completed with 2 full lines or it'll stay like it is now? Tunnel Petrovac and Međak will have a second tube?

I've just seen on Steetmaps that it's planned to have an expressway that will connect the D425 directly the D8 (avoiding Čeveljuša) with a new bridge on the Neretva:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/43.0613/17.4999
http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=15/43.0454/17.5185

Does anybody have info on this shortcut? Will it be build in the near future?

Folks,

Croatia was country #6 on this year's road trip. We drove from Dublin (via GB - F - B - D - A - SLO) to Split, using the DB AutoZug between Dusseldorf and Schwarzach-St Veit. I haven't driven in Croatia since 2002, and the changes since then are huge. The signposting has improved greatly, with road numbers appearing with much more regularity, and the motorways are fantastic.

1. Here's the A1/A6 split, heading south or west.

2. There are plenty of rest areas along the A1. Croatia seems to have followed the French model of providing a mix of larger MSAs with food/fuel/etc, and smaller ones (like this) with just parking and toilets.

3. We also stayed in Istria. The A9 is now completed to full profile with the exception of two long viaducts, though the speed limit is 110 km/h rather than 130. You get dumped onto this roundabout at the northern terminus, where the queue for the SLO border began. It took 35 mins to get through the queue, which seems a bit much for the border between two EU states. Traffic from here to the Slovenian H5 was pretty bad -- this route would really benefit from a motorway upgrade. We went mid-morning on a mid-September weekday: it must be awful on summer weekends!

Overall, I found driving in Croatia a pleasure. The motorways weren't that busy, the tolls were low, signage was clear and consistent, and the scenery was stunning. The A1 is quite a feat of engineering, especially just north of Zadar where it winds down to the coast from the mountains through a series of tunnels and viaducts.

Unfortunately not, just the one below taken on the A9. This was more for the number plate than the road

The queue was long, but the A9 was practically empty. It seems that more capacity is needed at the crossing if an empty motorway leads to a 35 min queue at the crossing.

Are there any plans to connect the SLO H5 to the HR A9 with a motorway-standard road?
