In Istria county Italo-Croatian bilinguism is recognized by law so signs were made bilingual some years ago. It's not the same in Primorje Gorski-kotar, where some Italians live too (but at least they added Trieste next to Trst on new signs).

BTW, what's the status of this road? It looks like a good shortcut for Plitvice lakes but there is a no-entry sign at the junction with D1.

In real life, electronic toll collection was first introduced in Bergen, Norway in 1986, and well into the 21th century many countries still struggle to implement it.

you will not find "Trst" signs issued after 2000 at all (when the new law about signalization was done), only Trieste.

Speaking of Plitvice Lakes, my Croatian friend thought they were in Bosnia.

You pay double toll, when you go onto island.

Nice motorway, but sooo empty. Really sad to see that. And yes, no signs for Hungary anywhere.

It wasn't so empty, but I took all the pictures when no one was passing by. There's always higher traffic on the southernmost section Zagreb (Ivanja Reka) - Sv. Helena, because it's a common direction for Varaždin, Čakovec, Budapest (A4) and Bjelovar, Križevci, Koprivnica (A12/D10), but I didn't take many pictures from there. And true, it seems empty comparing to Slovenian motorways, but in Croatian terms it's one of the busiest motorways (with many commuters using it on daily basis).

It's an old sign (I think from 2000) when we didn't know whether we want to sign our motorways with "A" designations or with old, existing state route numbers (hence number 3 which was, and today again is, an highway/magistrala: Goričan-Varaždin-Zagreb (and further to Rijeka). Karlovac was signed because up to that moment A1 motorway (then also part of state route 3, like A4) was finished only from Zagreb to Karlovac (existing from 1972) and there were few motorways in the whole country (40 km of A1, parts of A2, A3, parts of A4, parts of A6), so Karlovac was the furthest town which could have been reached by a motorway. But it's stupid to sign Karlovac so far away...

A quick question : I'm going on my holidays again to Croatia, this time staying in Orebić. Can anyone tell me - if I'm coming from Metković, what makes more sense - the ferry from Ploce, or just to drive round via Neum?

I'm arriving on Sunday, so avoiding the usual summer Saturday madness in Croatia.

I would (did) drive. ferry from Ploče isn't so frequent, it costs and you don't gain much time compared to the road variant.

you have 85 km more using the Neum variant. let's say that it is a cost of cca 10€.
if we're talking about high summer season, ferry for a car and 2 persons costs 26€ per direction. it is not that rare, it has 7 voyages per day, but the price difference is significant for such a distance. however, Neum is gambling thing since it is surrounded by EU, and D414 at Pelješac is ok, but really narrow at some places. count on 2h for Ploče - Orebić (considering that you will not wait at border crossings more than 5 min)

how about waiting for the ferry in 35°C on the sun, that's always a pleasant experience, especially if you don't get on the next one
