Zagreb - Karlovac on Saturday is a total disaster. Extra toll money should be invested in upgrade to 6 lanes

Taking into account this AADT (ASDT) and amount of tolls charged for use of this motorway, servicing of debts for construction of this motorway should not be a problem.

Extra toll money is invested in paying off huge debts.

Maslenica Bridge/Maslenički most

So called "Old Maslenica Bridge" with clearance over 50 metres. Very popular place among bungee jumpers.

New Maslenica Bridge on A1 motorway, seen from the older bridge.

Actually the 'New Maslenica Bridge' (A1) is older than the 'Old Maslenica Bridge' (D8).

yeah, but we still call the red one "old", and grey one "new"

interesting fact about Pag bridge: after its construction it has obviously been very poorly maintained, so in late 80es it was in disasterously poor condition. i remember that for years there was only one lane opened with obligatory large distance between vehicles. (poor condition is caused by very agressive enviroment consisting of salt and very strong wind). they have probably changed the whole bridge construction since the reinforcment got probably completely rusted and destroyed, and to change the reinforcment they should have changed the concrete, too.

Between 1991 and 1995 the Pag bridge was the only connection between northern and southern Croatia (with a ferry between the northern part of Pag and the mainland), because Kraijna occupied a strip of land all the way to the sea near Maslenica, cutting Croatia in half.

no, only between 1991 and 1993. in january 1993 Croatian forces have set free tight corridor around Maslenica, and in july 1993 the pontoon bridge was built. riding over it was not the most comfortable experience in the world (not because of the bridge, but because of was surrounding), but it was operational.

here you can see it well on the video (at 2:58 you can see one of 3 destroyed ferries that tried to keep the crossing operational before 1993)

Building steel bridges near the sea is always a bad idea

Pag, Krk and "new Maslenica" bridge (on A1) are reinforced concrete bridges. "Old Maslenica" (red one, on D8 state road) is from steel. I think that metal bridges are better in salty environment if they are properly maintained (see Golden Gate bridge and its long life span).

This steel bridge in Italy, completed in 1936, will be completely removed this winter and replaced by a new one (its pieces are already being made in a factory in San Giorgio di Nogaro and will be transported there by ship), because it's badly corroded beyond repair.

there was actually never the option to build something else than exactly the same one in the same colour again. it's a real beauty.

When will A2 from Đurmanec to Tkalci be completed as a full motorway? It seems only a few short tunnels are left to twin.
