If my count is correct, Greece opened 266 kilometers of new motorway in 2017 so far. That's maybe more than the 10 years before combined. Are there more motorway openings expected until the end of the year?

No, it is enough for 2017

As far for your question in the previous page, I think that the A7 opening between Korinthos and Tripoli back in 1990-91 was slightly longer, 82km (I'm referring to a totally new alignment like in the case of the A3).

Olympia Odos (A8): 100 km
Ionia Odos (A5): 120 km
Aegean Motorway (part of A1): 30 km
Central Greece Motorway - E65 (A3): 80 km

330 km alone in 2017, that's an accomplishment i can say, doesn't happen quite often....

Ah, right, I missed two sections of A8;

* Xilokastro - Ligia (17 km)
* Derveni - Lampiri (45 km)

They opened sometime 2017 but I couldn't find an exact date or month.

It appears that Greece opened the most new motorways in all of Europe this year.

The main contender is Poland. It opened 285 - 300 kilometers of motorway in 2017, depending if another section of S8 will open before the end of the year. Spain only opened some 65 km. Greece opened 330 kilometers.

Indeed, for the most part, the Greek motorway network is finished.
Still, however, there are three major motorway projects that remain:
  1. the two missing -south & north- sections of A3 motorway
  2. the entire A52 motorway
  3. the Patra-Pyrgos section of A5 motorway

And perhaps the expansion of the single carriageway section of A1 in Northern Greece?

Yes, that too.
I was thinking of projects that are currently under construction or have been put on hold for various reasons, but have their respective studies, such as environmental impact assessment, complete. Not future projects that are in the very early planning stages, such as A1 or A13.

And... I just realised that I omitted to mention, a small part of A90 currently under construction, between Kato Gouves and Hersonissos, in the island of Crete.

Yes indeed! but its a quite easy project. Its plain terrain, half part of motorway is done, they just need to double it for 45 km and ground is already free of any buildings/agricultural activities etc. (last part Polykastro- Greece/FYROM border is already a motorway, although needs some renovation). It is going to start being built just after A2 and its vetrical roads will be sold, during 2018.

It's weird that Greece hasn't completed the A1 between Thessaloniki and the FYROM border, as it's the main route between Greece and Western Europe. Maybe because of bad relations with FYROM?

Can someone post an updated map of Greek motorways with all these new openings included?

You can use a translator so you can check the costs of using the highways thoroughly . As you can see on this image there are the prices in euro for each frontal or sideway toll station on all the highways on service

Thank you lampsakos21.

As italystf said, the only really major link missing is the one toward Macedonia. Any plans to upgrade it?

Also there are some good news for the remnant parts of E65 kentriki odos highway. DG Comp has approved the tender for the southern branch Lamia -Xiniada and if all goes well the construction will begin around end of february begining of March . The official time for that lot is 3 years but thye really wantbto finish it around 2019 max ( part A1 - Lamia ( lianokliadi ) is already at 55 % done and the tunnel of Domokos ( 3,2 km) is already trivelled from both fronts 500 m from one side and 500 m from the southern side .Also Trikala - Grevena is already chosen and already has the approvement to be tendered by both european commisions and enviromental inspections and studies .it will be delayed to be constructed for some months now due to financing issues and will bedone by 2021 ( late ) it has been chosen forthis lot the tractthat goes near the City of Grevena so it can follow mostly the corridors that lead to Kristalopigi and Koritsa -Korce and the other one that leads to Niki and Monastiri -Bitola .is way more economic that second lot pf E65 due to better geomorphology .Also they begun the initiation and approval of Attiki Odos expansions :2)Tunnel between Attiki odos ( Vouliagmeni leoforos -Immitos -Vari -airport of El.Venizelos
2)Completion of southeastern branchof Attiki odos from ilioupoli to vouliagmeni districts
3) completion of the tract between attiki odos andRafina port
4) completion of the tracth of attiki odos fromairportof El Venizelos till Lavrio city
5) leoforos Kimis expansion
6 ) completion of western tract of Attiki odos ( Aegaleo district )

This used to be the main route between Greece and Western Europe before the war in Yugoslavia. After 1991 traffic was necessarily diverted to the ferries between Greece and Italy. When the war stopped, 3 new borders appeared within ex Yugoslavia, which made that route rather troublesome, especially for truck drivers who had to go through checks at every customs office. So, the route through Italy remains the main connection between Greece and the rest of the EU until now.
A1 between Thessaloniki and Evzoni (the border town near FYROM) has a rather low traffic. It would be a waste of money to upgrade it to a 2+2 motorway.

13.30 EUR for Rio-Antirio bridge looks like a blackmail.

Tolls in Greece have been discussed numerous times. Not only do they appear to be somewhat on the high side considering average income in Greece (~0.10 €/km for passenger vehicles - about the same as for France / Italy; lower than Spain), it seems particularly annoying that they have toll stations "on route" (eg > 5 toll stations between Athens and Kalamata which is ~250 km), thus limiting the gain in average travel time and consequently making the use of the motorways less attractive.

For me personally, the use of greek motorways is simply out of the question, since my VW Bus Camper Van is charged like a 40-ton truck (> 0.30 €/km). I have no idea what the thinking behind this is. I cannot see how it is fair pricing that a 3 to SUV is charged at a third of the rate. But we all have our burden to carry, don't we?
