Are there any newly open highway sections along Egnatia Odos? Will there be any new sections of Egnatia Odos which will be opened until June?Because as far as I know the Egnatia Odos highway goes only up to Grevena + another section from Ioannina up to Igoumenitsa. If I'm not right, please correct me
i think the best route is kulata-thessaloniki and then egnatia odos to ioannina.i think the only section u/c till ioannina is from grevena to panagia.i don't know if works are goinng to finish till june.from ioannina you should take national road 5 and then 21.

Let's make a little historical and geopolitical analysis. The Adriatic-Ionian motorway is in my opinion mostly of touristic interest. The Adriatic-Aegean corridor is more important to Croatia. Greece has its own interest there. Italians are more interested in the Corridor VIII through Macedonia and Bulgaria to the Black Sea. Macedonia and Bulgaria are late with the realization, so Greece, it seems, takes the opportunity to bypass Macedonia and to prevent it from gaining greater geopolitical importance. In the picture below you can see that the Roman Egnatia road ran from Durres via Ohrid and FYR Macedonia to Turkey. Rome is no longer the center of the world.
The Croatian coastal motorway (A1) has the real chance to overtake at least a part of the ferry traffic on the route Igoumenitsa (GR) - Italy (Brinidisi, Ancona). The transit towards Central Europe, which now goes through Macedonia, Belgrade and the A3 in Croatia, could go via the Croatian A1 to Zagreb or Triest, Northern Italy or Central Europe.
Greeks, with the intention to bypass Macedonia via Kastoria towards Tirana and Durres are also giving a chance to us.
The Greek Egnatia motorway and the Corridor VIII through Macedonia and Bulgaria (the "Italian" corridor or the "parallel Egnatia" via Skopje and Sofia) are in competition (see below). The Croatian coastal motroway is also in competition with the Macedonian and Serbian motorways (to Belgrade).

As a conclusion: Croatia, Montenegro and Albania are gaining importance in the region. USA is supporting Albania (USA are even building a motorway to Kosovo) and Croatia. Both countries are now in the NATO. Montenegro is also willing to play a role in the Western world, but Russians are also investing in Montenegro.

Roman Via Egnatia:

Long live the Adriatic-Aegean motorway!

Hello, I'm new to your forum and I am very impressed with the photos of the new motorway in Greece. This is the only place I could find any up to date information. I'm still a little confused, can anyone tell me if the E90 (is that the official name?) is completed? I will be in Greece in June this year, driving from Igoumentista to Tsotili. When I was there is 2004 it tooks us 4 hours by car. Can anyone tell me if that section of the motorway is completed and what the estimated travel time would be. Thanks for your help and I love the pics posted of Monaco too. Fantastic

Hello !

welcome here.

It is not completed yet till Tsotili. the motorway still has 3 sections not finished.

but I think what you see in June will not take more than 2.5 hours from you. Depending on the progress of works.

Could anybody tell me how much for motorway from FYROM border to ATHINA ?
I want to spend my holidays in Greece this year and I need informations, for example:
How much diesel? is it true that 2009 will be the cheapest year for turists for 10 years in Greece?
Sorry for OT, but maybe those information would be useful for more people?

Hi !

it is about 550 km if you don't stop on your way to see other citys, for example Thess/niki.

can't tell if it will be cheapest in 10 years though... I don't know.

I dont know much about diesel, but if you drive your own car, calculate TOLLS price from Thessaloniki to Athens: is about 12 euros...

My friend today two very hard parts of the motorway between Igoumenitsa and Thessaloniki (official name: Egnatia Odos) are open for the traffic. Until june the last part of 35 km will be open (officials are talking for May). So the whole road will be a motorway for you!! The estimated time will be around 2 hours until Siatista interchange and i think 20-30 min until the village of Tsotili.
