Athens new Highways

The competent minister, Giorgos Souflias announced on Monday that by the end of the year, the 55km extensions of Attiki Odos with a budget of 1.2 billion euro will have been tendered.

The extensions of Attiki Odos include:

- The Western Hymettus Ring Road linking the southern end of Attiki Odos at the junction with Katehaki Avenue to Posidonos Avenue

- The tunnel under Mount Hymettus

- The Mesogeia- Rafina axis

- The Stavros – Rafina axis

- The reconstruction of Posidonos Avenue underground.

The Western Hymettus RingRoad will run mostly underground (with 10% running on ground), in contrast to the provisions of the cancelled tender, according to which it would mainly run on the ground.

The toll to be payed by the extended Attiki Odos users will be calculated according to distance. A maximum toll will not be higher than the one currently paid.

The concession contract will probably have a duration of 25 years. The concessionaire will be selected within a year, if no objections and lawsuits are filed.

Mr Souflias announced that by late 2009, the V-shaped metro line connecting Galatsi to Maroussi through the centre of Athens will be tendered.

The Ministry will tender a series of road works totalling 28.5 km and 350 million euro. These include the extension of the Lavrio Road, the Peania-Markopoulo ring road, Kymis Avenue and the underground passage of the middle section of Alexandras Avenue.

There is already Egaleo Ring to the East of the city and to the west the new Hymettus extension will reach poseidonos avenue which most of it is in bad staste most of its length is in bad state so poseidonos avenue should have a long tunnel like 6 km to cross Peireaus which i doubt will happend. Anyway the geographic setting of athens is in such way which there can be full ring Like London's M25

I think it would be possible to widen the Poseidonos Odos to 6 lanes with cut&cover tunnels. If the Poseidonos Odos would get a motorway status, then A1 and Attiki Odos spurs/beltlines would form a ringroad around much of central and eastern Athens. Getting through Pireaus would indeed mean a long tunnel, since there's not space to widen existing roads in that area. Maybe something for the future.

Poseidonos Avenue has already 6 lanes (there are even 8 lanes in the section from Syggrou Avenue to the A1) but it is an urban boulevard with traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and a tramway aside. It is running along the coast and serves local transport as well. Except the area around the old airport where there is more space and a planned tunnel is considered, it seems very difficult to close it for any major works as there are not any decent alternatives for diverted traffic during the roadworks.

I totally agree about Piraeus.

The map at Greek Motorway Net site shows the planned extensions / upgrades in purple colour with a lighter shade than existing motorways.

I made a rough map of existing Attica motorways/highways and of the future extensions according to the plan presented by the Minister of Public Works, very simple, but easy to understand. Here it is:

Attica Road extension has entered into final stage with the assignment of its construction. The new roads will link Kaisariani with Poseidonos Av. And Agia Marina, in Koropi with Rafina. Environment and Public Works Minister G. Souflias, in a press interview announced that a bid for the construction of the Attica road would be placed on December, 22. The contractor will be decided at the beginning of 2010 and the project will be ready in 2015. Mr. Souflias described it as a major project linking Katehaki with coastal Poseidonos Av. Through a Hymittos tunnel.
The project completes the ring road of 71km total length and estimated budget 1.8 billion euros.

350.000 Trees in Hymettus

Environment and Public Works Minister G. Souflias said that the contractor could start works at the beginning of 2010 provided that no serious objections are raised. He said the estimated time for the completion of the 71.6km long road will range from 55 to 65 months with an interim 50 month agreement for the completion of the 14.7km critical west Hymettus ring road from Katehaki- Oulof Palme till Poseidonos Av. Eighty-five percent of the new ring road will be underground to protect the environment.

Mr. Souflias also announced the installation of an electronic system for the payment of tolls per kilometer. Which as he said is the most fair system. He also referred to another important point which is the planting and conservation of more than 350.000 trees in a total of 5.5 thousand acres of land along the borderline of residential area in west Hymettus. Also a fire detection system will be installed for the protection of the area which has been declared national park Natura. Environment Minister described it as a major project where comments and observations of several competent sectors were taken into consideration.

In parallel, procedures for the completion of other road projects in Attica are under way. Among those projects are extension of Kymi Av, till the national road, partial sinking of Alexandras Av., widening of Kifisos Av.

Mr. Souflias underlined that he had placed top priority to Metro projects during his 5.5 years at the Ministry. Operation of Nomismatokopeio station begins in a few days while another four stations Holargos, Peristeri, Anthoupolis and Haidari will be delivered at the end of the year.
