There is some renewed proposals for the A22 motorway which will connect A2 near Kavala with the A25 west of Serres via Drama.

Initially it was thought to construct on a more straight line between Kavala and Serres, but due to protests from the people, local MP's and authorities of Drama, it was decided to follow an alignment close to National Road 12.

The whole A22 will be 115Km long. The Serres bypass (15Km long) has been already drafted and the tender will follow soon. The 70Km long Serres to Drama section is half under planning or the drafting procedures have been started while the Drama to Kavala section (30Km long) has been also drafted. The plans call for a 2+2 (plus hard shoulder) motorway and the whole plans will be reviewed by Egnatia Odos SA.

An interesting shot snapped last summer :

Is it allowed in Greece to ride a bicycle on a highway?

Anyway, I admire that guy : no shade, high temperature, vast luggage, up the hill -

We will never forget one feature of Greek highways :

marvelous flowery bushes everywhere aside the road. What is its name in Greek? In Polish it is called oleander.

oleander = πικροδάφνη / pikrodafni (plural πικροδάφνες / pikrodafnes)

Of course bicycles cannot use motorways but do you think that a lot of Greeks do know the regulations of driving on motorways? You also see lots of car and truck drivers using the emergency lane (hard shoulder) as a proper lane!

And also count that there are some places with no alternative road other than a motorway with the most common example the Athens Airport. Legally, you cannot reach it (and the Retail Park next to it) by moped, bicycle, agricultural tractor or on foot because the only road that reaches it is the A62 motorway or people who need to visit the Traffic Police of Kapandriti (a public authority that might be reached by anybody) can do it only through the A1 as it is built on a motorway services area and the same also happens with some enterprises based on a services area along the A6!

Please do not ask who is going to go to the Airport on foot. Why not after all?

Those pics are unbelievable. In Italy it would never happen.
Is this common in the Balkans? Is allowed or at least tolerated?
Are those motorways tolled? How they managed to pass the toll booths without being stopped or arrested?

Attiki Odos (Attican Road): A6, A62, A64, A65, A642

At the moment, the only company that work are the Moreas Motorway both on the A7 and the A71. All other works have been suspended with the exception of the A52 (which is not privatized).

Long live privatizations!!!

(*) As I have explained before, it is still unclear if it will keep the designation A9 or become the southern part of A5
I just want to make some corrections to your post about the enterprises that maintain and construct greek motorways.

1.EGNATIA ODOS S.A. At this moment the only highway enterprise under public control in Greece is Egnatia Odos S.A, which operates A2 constructed highway (Igoumenitsa - Thessaloniki - Alexandroupoli - Turkish Border () and constructed or partially under construction "Egnatia's vertical axes" highways in North Greece.
-A2/ Igoumenitsa - Thessaloniki - Alexandroupoli - Turkish Border (670km all constructed)
-A29/ Siatista (interchange with A2) - Kastoria - Krystaloppigi (Albanian borders) Total:72km Constructed:51km Under tender(9/2011):21km
-A25/ Thessaloniki - Serres - Promachonas (Bulgarian borders) Total:96km Constructed:65km Under construction:31km

2. Olympia odos s.a - private
-A8/ Elefsina (Athens) - Korinthos - Patra Total:183km Constructed:63 U/C:120
-A9/ Patra - Pyrgos - Tsakona new highway Total: 164km

3. Moreas highway s.a. -private
-A7/ Korinthos -Tripoli - Kalamata Total:158km Constructed:~120km U/C:~30-40km
-A71 Branch/ Leuktro - Sparti Total:47Km all U/C

4. Nea Odos s.a - private
-Part of A1/ Metamorfosi (Athens) - Skarfeia (near Lamia) Total:~200km all constructed
- A5 (Ionia Odos) Antirrio - Ioannina Total:196km Constructed:~50Km U/C:the rest

5. Kentriki odos s.a - private
-Part of A1/ Skarfeia - Raches (around of maliakos gulf in lamia area) Total:57km Constructed:~35Km U/C:~20km
-A3/ Lamia- Trikala - Panagia (A2) Total:174km all U/C

6. Aegean motorway s.a. -private
-Part of A1/ Raches (near Lamia) - Kleidi (A2 near Thessaloniki) Total:230km almost all constructed except from an U/C 15-20km part in Tembi area including a tunnel of 6km.

In a previous post you have noticed that according to that announcement http://www.egnatia.gr/page/default.asp?la=1&id=3248 Egnatia odos s.a takes under its control two private highway enterprises (kentriki odos and aegean motorway). You have misunderstood.
Egnatia odos s.a has been selected from the greek authorities (from 2008) to be the correspondent in the concession project and supervise the progress of the constructions from the private enterprises at this particular 2
cases.

I see that Greek roads are quite simillar to Macedonian ones, the only difference is the yellow socialist stripe in Macedonian highways..the signs are the same, red and yellow.
