how does the road 8A between Korinth and Rio look like? i thought it was a motorway.

It was constructed in the 1960s as a single carriage fast tolled road with one and a half lane on each direction, with the exception of 4 rather small sections that were of the form of a 2+2+hard shoulder dual carriageway. With the exception of two level junctions at the area of the Corinth Canal all other intersections were grade separated and in fact the Korinthos (Corinth) - Patra section was signed as an expressway (οδός ταχείας κυκλοφορίας in Greek).

The Elefsina to Korinthos section (up to the A7) has been transformed into a 3+3+hard shoulder motorway since the late 1990s, while in 2008 works started in order to complete the motorway all the way up to Patra. However, all works have been stopped by mid-2011 as the Olympia Odos enterprise, which was selected to construct and maintain the A8 motorway and also collect the toll, faced (or at least this what they keep saying) some financing difficulties in borrowing by banks.

The worse of it is that they are still collecting toll money and that they have reduced the width of most of the unfinished section to 1+1 lane as they had started the widening working on the edges. There are hopes that works will commence again in 2012.

And btw A7 now is completed (except the part before Kalamata)?

A71 will be completed by the end of 2013 along with Kalamata’s ring-road.
Currently, A7 is missing the part from Paradisia to Kalamata.

The existence of the A2 as well as the A8/A5 combination (when ready) and the A3 (if it gets all the way to the A2) seem to be OK as they can hold the vast majority of all east-west traffic.

The A90 is indicated on the map with light grey as a proposal; it is close to the coast so you may have not spotted it. There is some progress but very slow. For example over the next few days they intend to open the Malia bypass so there will be a continuous expressway from Kastelli up to Agios Nikolaos (mainly single carriageway except around the cities of Hania, Rethymno and Irakleio which have been upgraded to motorway standards).
