@Stavros86

I think that they have started using DIN1451 on blue signs at well. I have seen quite a lot of this font within Greater Athens as well (on blue signs). Of course, the 1974 guidelines seem to be still valid outside motorways.

Btw, I doubt that the signs on the A8 are in DIN1451. Last weekend I went to Korinthos, and my first impression was "this seems... Arial to me".

Signing at Attiki Odos is to me a 'black hole' on a splendid, otherwise, motorway.

@vatse

Green motorway signs appeared in Greece in 1992. Until then all directional signs were blue and the Greek/yellow - Roman/white arrangement was enforced since the early-1960's. And as you say it is OK on blue and the arrangement was already 30 years old so it remained valid for the motorway signs as well. Personally I cannot find difficult to read the yellow fonts on the green signs as well; it may be something to do if you are used to read Greek.

It is true that there are a lot of new non-motorway informatory signs that use the DIN 1451 typeface. To be honest, I am not aware of any new regulations that amend the ones of 1974. I believe that, that typeface is used due to negligence of the makers and/or because of the software that they use. Letís admit it; there is no company that strictly follows the official guidelines, no matter if it is motorway or regular signs.

Although for a regular road user the new signs on A8 are excellent, for me are simply unacceptable. They use Arial (yes, youíre right) instead of DIN 1451. Another inappropriate thing is that they have on the left side the shield of the motorway, that is A8, and on the other side the E-route number (E 94). On the other hand, MOREAS on A7, uses the Helvetica typeface.

Regarding Attiki Odos, A6, although they tried to follow the guidelines (ΟΜΟΕ-ΣΚΑ 1992) as much as they could, there is space of a lot of improvement. Donít forget that this was the first real urban motorway in Greece. Signing on urban motorways is a little bit different that rural motorways. On the issue with the empty shields, I think it may have to do with the software that designs the signs. Usually this kind of software provides predefined shapes and figures. So, I believe that they just went along with what the software provided back then.

I'm sure there are exceptions (China? North Korea?), but all the places I've been to which use other alphabets have major signs transliterated in Latin alphabet.

@stavros86

You are absolutely right.

I just need to add that according to the motorway signing guidelines, E-road numbers should not be indicated on direction signs; they should be pur only on route confirmation signs after each exit/interchange.

And for any members who haven't followed my usual complaints, just to remind that it is not only the "A" missing from numbers on the A1, A6 and branches and the A90 (there are some newer signs on the A1 who bear that "A"; let's hope more will start to appear), but also that exits should be numbered according to the Km point and not sequentially, but nobody does so.

And finally, once more: When will we have a common signing regulation for all roads (motorways, national and other roads) and when will we am amend and use properly our national road numbering system?

@vatse

Thank you for your photos.

Hello guys,

As on Thursday (Wednsday night - Thursday morning) I'll be driving again cross Bulgaria to Greece, I want your recommandation on some questions:

I drive from Ruse towards Thassos, Grece and there are two main options: Ruse - Veliko Tarnovo - Zlatograd (Bg) - Thermes - Xanthi or Ruse - Svilengrad (Bg) Ormenio - Orestiada - A2-Egnatia

I have some questions as you for sure know the the options better:
- the Thermes - Xanthi is a local road, correct? Is it difficult / bad?
- Ormenio - Orestiada - A2 entrance I hear is quite ok and relatevely free of traffic, is that true?
- A2 is quite ok I hear, any road tax on it? (and any road tax at the Greece border for that matter? If I remember correctly last year there was no tax getting from Kulata to Thessaloniki)
- 130kmph the speed limit on the A2?

Any other advice is welcomed, thanks a lot and looking forward to getting to you

I cannot answer the first question. I don't know...
Yes, Ormenio - Orestiada is OK. I'd use that route, instead.
You don't pay at the borders, AFAIK, but there are some toll stations on the A2 Egnatia Highway.
The speed limit varies on the A2. 130 km/h applies to most parts of the highway, except for tunnels, bridges and mountainous uphill sections where speed limits drop to 100 km/h or even 80...

Don't even think about the Xanthi option. I doubt if the last kilometres to the Thermes border are even paved and I am not sure if there a border passage there.

Go via Ormenio (NR51 - it is an expressway, for most of its route; although a single carriageway one it will be OK to run it at 100-110Km/h) and join the A2 at Ardani. More distance but it is the... wise option.

The road from Zlatograd to Xanthi is paved, but the part from BG border to Xanthi (actually not the whole road, just a part of it) is very narrow and with many curves. But if you want to get to Zlatograd you must pass narrow and curved roads in Bulgaria. The best option to get to GR border is Kulata, Ormenio is good, but it depends where you want to go. If your destination is Northern Greece, you can go via Ormenio or Zlatograd, but if you're heading Athens, the best option is Kulata.

Tollstations on A2 (Egnatia Odos) are west from Thessaloniki, you should consider them only if you're planning to go to Igoumenitsa.

There is a tollstation west of Alexandroupolis before Thassos.

Via zlatograd on the greek side the road is very narrow and curvy, you will be driving with 20-30 kmh. Via svilengrad is just the opposite.
Makaza would be thebest but the greeks are dragging their feet.

I've been in Halkidiki last year and Kulata was the road, yes.
Since Kavala & Thassos are my destinations this year, I think Ormenio will be the choice in the end, given also the road situation in Bulgaria. Thanks a lot!
