Thank you so much, as I do every year, I am sure this year I'll have the best of times
Western A2 is full of tunnels, maybe around 60 and becomes very tiresome to drive in and out of them.

It's about Bulgarian checkpoints. I don't know about overall in Greece.

"Euzoni" border crossing has nothing to do with Bulgaria.... It's a Greece - F.Y.R.O.M. check point.

It looks like Street view has revealed unused toll plazas on EO8a. Does it mean the whole road is still free to use in some way, except for that one plaza near Patras?

A 10 minute long video showing the motorway A71, from the Lefktro interchange (beginning of the road) up to Loganikos interchange. The length of the section is 15,2 kilometres.

Do you mean the section of Athens-Thessaloniki motorway that bypasses Larisa? If so, there were several companies, including:
  • ATTI-KAT S.A.
  • EFKLIDIS (part of ΑΕGΕΚ S.A.)
  • TEGK S.A.
  • ELLINIKI TECHNODOMIKI S.A. (part of AKTOR S.A. which is part of ELLAKTOR Group)
  • ZEUS S.A.
  • ETETH S.A. (part of J&P-AVAX Group)

The construction of that section was started in 1995 and ended in 1999.

Actually it was amazing. Egnatia Odos is the coolest road I've driven on.
I'll see if I have some good enough pics to put here

Hello, are there some news about highway from Evzoni to Thesalloniki? I know that there are plans for that section, but when I was passing month ago I didnt see any works near (only if works are on some further spot). As I remember when you pass Evzoni there is about 10km highway, then about 50km is motorway, untill the road splits to Thessalonikki and Athens.

(in case that there was word about this earlier, because here are nearly 100 pages, consider this as a question what are the news/updates about this section)

Actually there are some plans but just "on the map". This means no scheduled construction works in the near future. This road is kind of the "Gate" of Greece as you enter the country by car, but it is almost abandonded and kept in a very bad situation.

One more "crazy biker" video:

The fact that that guy survived is a testimony to the good quality of the road surface.

And a fast ride through the forests of Northern Evia:

Quite strange given the fact that A1 is called PAThE Isn't there a lot of traffic from Th to Evzoni? I guess there are works more important to be completed but even so....

And since we're at A1: there are some works of a new tunnel not far from Katerini towards Larisa, any completion dates there?

The only news regarding the northern part of A1 (Chalastra - Euzwnoi) is that the ownership of the road has been transferred from "discontinued" National Road Fund (TEO) to Egnatia Odos S.A., who has the ownership of A2 and its vertical axes.
"Egnatia Odos S.A." currently under public control is during the process of privatization.
There is no plan or hope for construction work regarding highway upgrade but at least just a hope for some maintenance works.

To my point of view, the road characteristics are acceptable for the relative low traffic of that part.
On the other hand, the condition of the road surface and road's equipment in general is totally unacceptable and can be identified as dangerous also.

On your second point, you probably notice "Platamonas" tunnels. They are part of A1 ~24Km under construction section "Tempi Valley and Platamonas Bypass " consisting of 3 big twin tunnels (6Km, 2,7 Km and 2 km)

All the section is expected to be completed on August 2015.

I would not disagree that relatively the traffic loads are not so high on this part (Chalastra-Evzoni) but there are higher than 90s ans 00s. After yugoslavian crisis the E75 route (Belgrade-Skopje-Thessaloniki) is again a main route in Balkans and traffic is getting higher year by year (considering the rising touristic flow from Balkans to Greece by car).

So in my opinion this road should be converted to a motorway:
-Construction would be really cheap, the Polykastro-Chalastra section is no more than 45 km. The surface is very "easy", no mountains, land is free from owners, as when the road was constructed in the 70s all the land matters were solved - it was planned to be upgraded to motorway soon.
-it is the main driving "gate" of Greece, it is a kind of prestige also.
-traffic will increase as Thessaloniki port will be privatised in the next 2-3 years.
