NEW DELHI | IJM Building | 30 fl | Pro

IJM Building New Delhi's Tallest Building

NEW DELHI, Feb 14 (Bernama) -- A Malaysian company, IJM (India) Infrastructure Ltd, is helping to build New Delhi's soon-to-be tallest building, a convention centre for the Municipal Council of Delhi.

Szeto Wai Loong, project director of the company, said IJM (India) had won an international tender single-handedly in late 2005 based on its good track record in building the Putrajaya International Convention Centre in 2001/2002.

The experience had provided it with a competitive edge against other bidders, he added.

The 30-storey centre costing about RM500 million will be the Indian capital's tallest structure when it is completed by the end of 2008.

"At present, the tall buildings in New Delhi are only about 15 storeys high. The convention centre will be a state-of-the-art building built in with the latest technological features. It will also be a +green+ building in that it will only emit low heat," he told Bernama here.

Szeto, who has been in New Delhi, for about a year, said about 20 Malaysians were helping to supervise a local workforce of about 1,000.

"The number of (local) workers should peak later this year or next year to 2,000 as the building is scheduled for completion by the end of 2008," he said.

Szeto said IJM (India) is also involved in two other projects in New Delhi.

The company is building two packages under Phase Two of the Delhi Metro or light rail transit project.

It had been awarded two packages initially.

But when it successfully completed one of the packages last year, it was awarded another package, making a total of three.

I'm pretty sure it'll be the tallest building in the city, not the entire country.

There is one that was posted here a while ago.

I found it.

I think the design looks very 80's. Also, New Delhi passed a new Master Plan for the city, and they are actively looking to grow taller. Look out for more updates.

Announcement on IJM's site:

And if anyone's interested, here is the thread in the SSC-India section.

New Delhi has always had height restrictions because some urban planners and architects feel skyscrapers do not go with New Delhi's heritage. This building too was opposed by the New Delhi Urban Arts commission and was told to lower its height to 15 storeys. Finally the Delhi Municipal Corporation prevailed over the NDUAC.

The new masterplan which was published last week envisages more highrises, but there will no doubt be legal challenges by opponents of highrise buildings or conservation architects. The right balance between lowrise and high rise is yet to be found - so the debate will continue I guess.
