Yes. Part of the Northern Mindanao Region. Specifically, Misamis Occidental

Tangub's Christmas Symbol Fest, a trademark of Mindanao
Sunday, December 17 2006 @ 12:06 PM GMT

Provincial

It was just one big Christmas tree in the heart of the city’s plaza that was lighted for the whole month of December and the rest is, what they say, history.

That Christmas tree made of hay stock with lights turned into hundreds of symbols after 14 years, showing the best of Filipino ingenuity, as in other cities and provinces, replicate its successful staging.

The festival even won the 2nd prize of the tourism event of the year organized by the Department of Tourism.

The concept

It was created way back in 1992 under the administration of then Mayor Phillip Tan to bring the Christmas spirit in the city and for people to have something to see at night during the season.

The city is one of the most peaceful places in this part of the country and having something to do at night is an event during those days.

After realizing that the Christmas tree has an impact on people, the city government decided to have another symbol the next Christmas and, this time, not only one but many and it will be a contest among city government offices.

As years go by, many people visit the city during Christmas just to see the beautiful lights and huge lanterns.

In 2000, Department of Tourism Undersecretary Evelyn Pantig branded the city as the Christmas Symbol Capital of Mindanao when the DOT saw that no other cities or municipalities in the island do such.

The year after, DOT Undersecretary Oscar Palabyab in his visit to the place said that the city is not only the Christmas Symbol Capital of Mindanao but of the Philippines since it is the only kind of festival in the country.

The success

Tangubanons have been enjoying the prestige of setting the trend of celebrating Christmas the Filipino way.

Mayor Jennifer Tan said that after 14 years of holding the event, it has become a tradition and, through the years, their children grew and became teenagers still longing for the event.

“I would say we are getting better and better and the feeling is always different and our workmanship improves a lot“, said mayor Tan.

For her, those other cities replicating them is a sign that the project is really good but said that theirs’ is always different.

“We don’t put our success into our heads,” asserted mayor Tan.

It has been a tourist destination in the country every December.

Tangub’s economy has improved, where it boasts of a Pasalubong center, where small businesses grew, many activities (train and Kalesa ride) flourished, has published a book entitled “Tangub City: On the crossroads of change” and many symbols to see since they have now seven categories.

The light is not only centered in the plaza but throughout the city. Category A - the different interpretation of the season, sponsored by the employees in the plaza, Category B - the arches in the city’s 27 barangays, Category C - the parols, Category D1 - the most lighted business establishment inside the market while D2 is for the private and public establishment, Category F - the most lighted house in the barangay and Category E – the most lighted barangay.

Through the years, cooperation of the people is always there and it has been part of their lives.

“We don’t even care about the prize even with the electricity which costs P300,000 and the amount spent for every symbol they are making is around P110,000. What is important is that we are making people happy,” the mayor added.

The activity runs from December 1 to January 7, 2007.

“For those who were not able to come to Tangub, you missed a lot so you better come here and enjoy,” Mayor Tan said.
