Don't worry!
We are working on removing Krzyżowa and replacing it with something more meaningful like Bolesławiec.

Chris, what DerMartini meant was that the Highways Agency (GDDKiA) should use this kind of template. If you follow this line of thought, the sign would read something like this:

[A4] [A40]

(-> 2) Lubań 18 km
Bolesławiec yyy
Legnica zzz
Wrocław uuu
Katowice vvv

UPDATE: Look what I found in the Austrian thread. I am not an expert on Austrian autobahns but this looks like an interchange signed 76 km away. Correct me somebody, if I am wrong.

This stretch of the A4 is 51.4 km long.

Allegedly, it will open on Friday at 10:00 but I would treat this info as 100% speculation. Currently, we are waiting for all the paperwork to be completed. This must be done to a set standard and there is no way round this because of health & safety laws. As far as we know, the inspectors have not found anything that requires immediate remedial work so maybe Friday it will be, after all.

You're right. In Austria they sign it from a long distance. Knoten Villach is also signed from quite a distance, if I'm correct.

MAG: Thanks for the info. A few more questions!

1. Is this section of A4 going to be a toll road?
2. What are people using instead of it now?
3. Where exactly is this new section? (Between which towns, I want to see it on google maps!)

2. DK4, a shitty, narrow two laned road
3. Jedrzychowice-Krzyzowa

Scotch Corner in North Yorkshire? signed from quite a long way south - Wetherby IIRC.

Likewise Crianlarch (signed from 50 miles away in Fort William), a load of places in Mid and North Wales are signed from a long way away. Crainlarch is signed so you don't have to always sign both Fort William and Oban (themselves not very big) heading north/west on the A82/A85 and likewise Glasgow/Perth/Stirling heading south/east along the A82/A85. OK it's not even an interchange, but a T-junction (with another a few miles up the road at the similar-sized Tyndrum). Then again, the UK uses a different ethic when it comes to direction and distance signage compared with the rest of Europe.

There's quite a lot in Mid- and North- Wales, as well: St Clears, Llangurig and Betws-y-Coed being the most blatently small places.

We now have an official communiqué from the Highways Agency (GDDKiA) that the A4 (E40) will be open tomorrow 14 August at 10:00 for east-bound traffic and at 10:15 for west-bound traffic at junctions Zgorzelec and Krzyżowa, respectively.

More, in Polish, here.

We will post pictures tomorrow as we get them.
