The answer is, most likely, that because of the fact that in the future the 3rd lane(external one) will become the exit lane for S7 going to Warsaw, as seen here.
Now however, it doesn't and the external lane is the one that ends. due to safety reasons, making merging of two lanes at a curve is not the best idea and so it has to be done a bit earlier, before the curve.

Before and after:

It's still too wide. It can easily contain 2 lanes + 1 exit lane + shoulder, while there are no shoulders on Polish motorways on those short sections with exit/enter lane. Or maybe there are going to be two lanes for A4 ahead and two exit lanes towards S7?

In most of the contracts it is period between 15.12 and 15.03. But of course it can be different period in real world

Seems, that LMB was in bad mood. I was just asking why there is such decision

I admit misjudgement, on second check I do see it's way wider than normally.

Maybe it's a safety landing strip?

Does anybody know the current status of the Warszawa - Białystok - Suwałki corridor?

So far I've seen various topics in FPW, but they are all long discussions. As far as I've seen, there were plans to find a route for S8 between Białystok and Suwałki (especially the Rospuda "valley"), but I've also seen maps which let S8 terminate in Białystok, (at S19) and let a S61 handle the through traffic to Lithuania via Ełk.

If I understand correctly from this post, the S8 from Białystok to Augustów is scrapped.

In return, a new expressway, S61, has been created to handle the Lithuania-bound traffic. Also, the routing of S19 around Białystok will be changed to form a 3/4th ring road.

All in all, environmental math: save the environment by cancel 10 km of expressway but construct 100 km additional expressway instead

Remember my post few weeks ago?

Białystok - Augustów (exluding bypass - here nothing changes) will be build as GP class 1x2 or 1+2 lanes..

S19 around Białytostok is crap. Honeslty, I'm not sure if it will ever be build. A feasibility analysis will show wheater it makes sense. I personally don't see it.

Apart from written above: infrastructure executive order regulates only the corridor. The path and number of lanes come from feasibility analysis and traffic projection.

Right.

S19 was always planned as a three-quarters of a ring around Białystok. But it was supposed to go just on the city limits, between the city and large forests surrounding it.

Now they became so scared of building in those forests, that they decided to reroute the ring around the forests. Some 20-30 kms away from the city.

My opinion? This is a tactical change.

Oficially, there's not enough money to build both expressways. So they had to scrap the part of S8 between Białystok and Augustów.
But, they've routed S19 to follow the former planned alignment of S8 between Choroszcz (west of Białystok) and current DK8 north of the city (Korycin). They're going to build that. The rest of S19 to BY border (to Hrodna) will not get built, because the traffic would be almost nul over this stretch.

After some 15-20 years, when the money will allow - they'll have to return to previuos plans and build the rest of the ring closely around Białystok and then through Sokółka to BY border as S19. And the Korycin (north of Białystok)-Augustów part of S8. That's the only reasonable routing of expressways around Białystok.

This means that, in the end, everything that was supposed to be be built - will be, with the surplus of S61 Via Baltica. But we'll have to wait for this many, many years - and that's a pity.

They really have to hurry up with that stretch as AFAIK there are no contracts signed yet(?).

I drive at least twice a year to/from Lithuania via Augustow and Lomza and trust me, it really gets very messy. A 2x2 is the minimum for that stretch and even so it would be very busy with all those trucks that are there.

The new VIA Baltica route is much better for Lithuanians. Because it's shorter and faster Last autumn I studied in Warsaw under Erasmus student exchange program, so I remembered, that I had some photos of polish roads I made last autumn.

Here how it looks when you enter Poland (not Via Baltica, because I drove from Vilnius, it's a road nr. 16 from border to Augustow)

Here I'm on Via Baltica. Road nr. 61. Stretch Augustow-Grajewo.Road qualitty is good, but could be wider.

Entering Łomża

Then I decided not to take a road directly to Ostrow Mazowiecka, because it's really bumpy and bad, but took direction to Zambrow, to reach road nr. 8 (Bialystok - Warszawa).
On the stretch Lomza - Zambrow.

Next photos from road nr. 8, stretch Zambrow - Ostrow Mazowiecka

A4 near Gliwice. Luckily, new week there will be the end of closing the road by the builders of Sosnica's Interchange.

That is a lot of trucks. I have seen similar chaos on A1 near Hamburg, three lanes, with two rows of stationary trucks.

Pn = Północ (North), but it also can be some district of Kraków

Wsch. - East
Zach. - West
Płn./Pn. - North
Poł./Pd - South

Can't wait until the 29th October then
When the Kraków-Szarów section opens the A4 will still be the longest existing motorway in Poland
It will be a historic day too as it will be the first stretch of motorway to open east of the Vistula
But the sooner work starts to extend the A4 from Szarów to Tarnów the better
Both Tarnów and Rzeszów need a fast motorway connection to Kraków
