Map of the road conditions in Poland? I have two of those on my hard drive, but a little... older:

1936/37:

Not exactly the best roads in the North:

10 years later:

RED: Asphalt / concrete
BROWN: Cobblestones
GREENish: Hardened dirtroad

Judging from the road conditions you can EXACTLY tell where the border used to be...

If anyone is interested in either of this maps I've uploaded them on Rapidshare (they are 30MB each, so it's the ony way):
1936/37
1947

At least much better than what we had 10 or 15 years ago.

About this map, you can see dominating contrast between West and East part

Bigger scan that the one I linked at the end of my post? It's 10146x11580px and it's 20MB - I don't really think that you can find anything bigger than that on the Internet. But if you really need more - only the National Library in Warsaw can help

I would like to see any traffic predictions on A1/D47 border. I suspect they might be quite low. Especially initially, mainly long distance transit.
There are not many ties in the border region. Mybe later more people will work abroad etc.
There is huge potential. For Jastrzebie or Wodzislaw Ostrava might be good shoping or entertainment destination instead of Katowice.
We'll see.
This figure might be outdated but the traffic prediction for the border stretch is around 11k only. See details here. I guess quite a lot of people from Ostrava will use the highway to get to Katowice airport, and Polish to do shopping in Ostrava... there's a big mall just next to the D1/Rudna junction.

Addressing the funding of the border stretch, I guess the money were just dislocated. Construction is not on hold but slowlier...

Force them?

Russians are nice people (and I mean it, they are cool), but as a nation they think they are special. You don't simply "tell them", you have to ask them. Kiss their feel. Apologise for being an *******. Bring flowers. Smile. Bow. Then maybe they will open the border crossing, which just as well might be to a bigger advantage to the population living on the Russian side of the border.

Sad, but the topic was about highways.

I especially praise your idea to separate the road quality from the road design. There are maps to show the latter, but yours adds important information.

Are there plans to improve the border crossings with Ukraine considering Euro2012?

From what I've heard, both exiting and entering Poland requires long waiting times, even a hundred cars may take hours to pass the border, not to mention when waves of supporters will cross it. I heard entering Poland is also a problem because there are no seperate lanes for EU-citizens.

I mean, it's great that UA waived the visa, but 6 hour waiting times are a total non-starter...

It is not a matter of infrastructure but service.

From what I've heard ukrainian Border Guard is a disaster.

The problem are Ukrainian customs, working slowly just to work out remaining hours.

The lack of EU-lanes isn't a problem because of two things. Firstly, there is always a gap between Ukrainian and Polish checks, because it takes more to pass the UA control, so you have to wait anyyway. Secondly, if a car in front of you is directed to detailed control(getting everything out of the car), you still can pass and don't have to wait.

But aren't there really no EU lanes at all crossing? I'll have to check it.

edit:

Yeah, I was sure there are:
