You have to remember that 'promoting commerce' was not one of the major priorities of the post-WWII Commies.

that's how building of some short sections of future expressways ends in Poland (the picture taken on Nowy Dwor Gdanski crossing on practically ready S7 -- see also further pics -- but too short to be named an expressway)

And some pics of my favourite S7 expressway - going north from Warsaw to Gdansk

a small map of this part of Poland to better understand what we are talking about (numbers as later used)

1) Elblag-Wschod crossing of S7 and S22 ("Berlinka") - finished in 2005 (I think;-)

on the first picture
- on the left DK7 (national road 7) to Warsaw, currently 1x2
- to the top of the picture DK7 to Gdansk before reconstruction to S7 (the reconstruction commenced in 2006 and was finished last summer, as shown on the pics to follow)
- on the upper right - road to city of Elblag
- on the lower right - DK22 to Kaliningrad (RUS) currently reconstructed to S22

2) Elblag bypass - finished in summer 2007 (pics taken in October 2007)

MOP Nowa Holandia (only for Gdansk --> Warszawa)

bridge over Elblag river

substandard crossing

end of expressway --> this crossing will be rebuilt during reconstruction of Elblag-Gdansk section into expressway

and some pics of the same section from official site:

view on the city

this crossing was not on my pics --> this is why only part of the bypass is officially named as expressway (to be rebuilt after 2009 propably)

and the substandard crossing that I've mentioned - this should be reconstructed even earlier

to be continued...

...

3) further north is the 1x2 part (the S7 will be mostly built on a new route) - this section was only modernised to this quite decent standard

bridge on Nogat river

4) this part will be used after reconstruction to full expressway, thus it's been built half-profile

Nowy Dwor Gdanski bypass and the crossing - already expressway standard, finished in October 2007, but (as I've mentioned) to short to be named S7

and again some pics from official site:

the whole DK 7 between Gdansk and Chyzne (SK) is to be rebuilt by 2012 to expressway standard

as far as the northern part is concerned (from Warsaw to Gdansk), there also exist two express sections: one 2x2 near Warsaw (in terrible condidtion, built in "good old times") and another short one on Milomlyn bypass (1x2). Moreover express bypass of Plonsk (60 km from warsaw) is currently under construction

the construction of the missing parts should start beginning from this year (Elblag-Paslek, visible on my map, and Southern Bypass of Gdansk)

it was like that, the picture is from 2005

reconstruction of northern part of DK7 into S7 started with construction of this crossing and then Elblag bypass

currently the 2-lane expressway section continuous in the Gdansk direction (upper-left on the picture) on the whole Elblag bypass (around 8 km) --> actually my pics of Elblag bypass start on this crossing (by the green-houses)

part of the bypass was part of pre-war RAB from Berlin to Koenigsberg, this was initially modernised in the early 90ties with full reconstruction and building of the second lane between 2006-2007

for example:

after

and some aerial photos from the construction:

Now time for some propaganda

On behalf of all Polish people(how loftily:P) I would like to wipe away one of our worst showcases - the A4 road right after entering to Poland. The highway(52km) is now U/C till October 2008, when there will be non stop highway to Crackow

Pics taken by 3,14saR

towards Wrocław:

Yeah, that would be great. I was actually wondering if the 2×1 road from Lodz to Warszawa gives a lot of problems, because there is no progress with the A2 on this place right?

I have a question about the A1:
On the map above it looks to me that the section between Piotrków Trybunalski and Bielsko-Biala is already a 2×2 road. Is this an S-road, or just a DK-road? And are there a lot of grade intersections? Can anyone tell me more about this section?

This is a DK road (100km/h), it was intended to be the motorway when built in the 70's, but the construction was discontinued, and almost all interchanges do not have flyovers

This section will became part of A1, the construction should start begg. 2009

This road is a very interesting exapmle of communist roads in Poland. It is patr of the 2x2 road built in the 70's for the first secretary of state Edward Gierek, leading from Warsaw through Piotrków Trybunalski, Katowice, Tychy to Ustroń near Cieszyn, where Edward Gierek had his summer hause
